Ask anyone who qualified for the 1980 Olympics. They ALL say the same thing - Carter's decision was idiotic. It has nothing to do with politics -- Carter's decision is universally laughed at.

Jimmy Carter's decision to boycott Moscow cost many dedicated, devoted, and talented athletes the opportunity to participate in the most important competition in the world. Winning a gold, IN MOSCOW, IN 1980, would have been incredible. That Carter destroyed the hopes and dreams of so many athletes in the name of stupid symbolic protest is just one of the many reasons Jimmy Carter is viewed as a joke of a president.

Steve Scott has every right to be pissed.

Carter was the Obama of his day, and Steve Scott has every right to be pissed at him for his idiocy and callous disregard for the lives of the people he supposedly represented.

This was a huge deal....I remember it so well. With 20/20 hindsight, we can see that the USSR was already falling apart. But their #1 adversary was....the USA. All other nations were ancillary to the faceoff.

This is about what is in the national interest. Caring? "Right"? Morals? What planet do you live on?

In 2001 it was clearly in the national interest of all nations to remove the Taliban. That one flew through the UN. Nobody objected, and for good reason.

If you were old enough to read a newspaper in 1978, you knew that there were a sh!tload of weapons in Europe, pointed right at you. That was a threat, and everybody knew it. It was in The West's interest to counter this threat, and that meant confronting USSR agression. This was in the UK's interest, and thats why they supported US military activities all over the world. How many UK soliders served in Vietnam?

National Interest was also why the US allowed the UK to test their own nuclear weapons INSIDE the US (Nevada) - it was in the US' interest to have a nuclear capable UK ready to launch.

In 2001 the threat was similar. More than a dozen countries have been victims of attacks directly attributable to elements hiding & training in Afghanistan and the western provinces.

Sports is not supposed to be about politics, but about competition. Carter made it into politics. Scott has every reason to be pissed.

We'd been in the Cold war for 25 years, and managed to compete in Eastern Bloc countries just fine, despite plenty of Soviet invasions/problems in that time. Carter decided to make athletes into political fodder, to make sports competition into his own moronic cause of the day.

If you could show me how that boycott helped anyone, please do. It looks to me that Carter basically pissed on our athletes and got nothing - NOTHING - in return, except making the USA look like whiny little wimps. And it cost hundreds of athletes the chance to fulfill their life's goal.

Do you honestly think that the USSR said to themselves, "Hey, let's not invade any more countries, because if we do, the USA won't come play sports in our country!"? Hell no, they were happy to rake in all the more gold medals, since we weren't there.

But the decision is no reason to condemn Carter as a whole and placing this quote on the front page is just confirming the site's conservative ideology. Carter's Nobel Prize had nothing to do with Afghanistan, by the way.

You're right. His decision definitely saved millions of lives.

It makes me happy knowing that not letting athletes participate in an international competition contributed to preventing so many deaths.

I bet that every lap an American ran, 1000 people would have died.

If Steve Scott would've taken care of business at the '84 Olympics - when he was AT HOME in L.A., one of the best in the world (reigning WC Silver Medalist), and had the advantage of no eastern bloc athletes...

Thank you for saying this. It is exactly the truth. Carter was most definitely the worst President in modern times, if not of all time. He was another very intelligent person who had absolutely no fu(king idea what the hell he was doing in the highest office in the world.

We were never attacked until we and the US invaded their country. 9/11 would never have happened if the US was not supporting Israel
