At age nine, wouldn't you almost expect girls to be somewhat ahead of boys? Most girls will be considerably more mature than boys at that age.

This is physically true until about age 11 and mentally true until around 19. Boys charge hard after those points though.
Article on the Wesley kid from 1979.
Wesley Paul now:
Funny quote:
“People in Asia think that distance running is dangerous,”
So Eikidens and marathons are so popular in Japan because they are "Extreme"?
So what did Wesley Pauls eventual running career look like? In that RT article his coash said he might be the first under 2 hrs. I do not remember that that happened.

This isn't correct. I have kids this age (10 and 12) and am around kids this age all the time, and can promise you that, as a group, boys are physically ahead of girls until 13 or so. Girls have a brief period from 13 to 15 or so where they can be physically more mature, but even then it's usually just in height and weight.

Is that you Jerry Sandusky?

Why is the 2:58 by the 10 year old girl MORE impressive? She finished later than him. Is it because she's a girl? And girls are "weaker" than boys? Because she finished later than him, and she's older than him, so really you shouldn't be impressed...unless of course you're a chauvinist. So don't go saying she is more impressive, because you're implicating that it was "more impressive...for a girl." or "more impressive, because she's a girl".
Don't be so surprised, we can do many things.
Well, for example, one metric you could apply is that her time was 15:01 from qualifying for the Olympics using this year's standards while his time was 38:57 from qualifying. Or, if you like, you could look at in terms of her time being 42:36 off the current women's world record while his time was 53:19 off the current men's world record. The age difference between them, 220 days, being relatively minor, there is more than enough reason to be more impressed by Mullin's performances. Any qualifications you choose to place on that are entirely your own.
I remember Wesley Paul running high school track and cross country at Shawnee Mission West High School. He was a better than average high school distance runner, but not a top flight runner. His times escape me but it seems he was a low 17, upper 16 5K runner in cross and low 10's for the 3200 in track. His high school coach was first rate, having coached Tim Davis (4:09) and Alex Hallock who was an All-American at Arkansas.
Anyone remember the Pamakid club in CA in the 70's? There was a big article on them in RW.
What happened to all those kids?
Mary Etta Boitano was with that club. She was on the cover of Runner's World. I think she ran 3:03.
How about the Hunky Bunch from Hawaii - Daven Chun at age 11 ran 2:52 for the marathon.
Yeah, sure, 2:56 for a marathon...but what is his 5k time?
lol
Let us know when he breaks 12 seconds FAT from the blocks.
Please let me ask who you are having claimed to have trained with the Mullin family in the late 1970's?

If Canadians want to be called Americans, then they can go ahead and rename their country.

because old people are mostly Christian fools who cant accept the fact that their final destination is not in a mystical sky kingdom with all their dead friends, but rather 6 feet in the dirt.
more interesting: Li Zhuhong ran his best time at 17 and continued competing for at least 8 years without another pr
scotth probably knows more than I, but in MI we had the Guntsches (sp?). They all were named after weather, like stormy ann and windy sue. I think stormy ann ran under 65 minutes at Crim when she was 12 or so.
