As you may recall, back in those days most folks couldn't read, write, or cipher. Communication was often nothing more than inarticulate grunts and enigmatic hand gestures. Therefore there was often a discrepancy from race to newspaper.

Mike Pinocci (sp) is in the picture, along with some other good local guys, John Dimick, Henry Phelan, and Eddie Sheehan.

As my daughter says, "back before they invented color!"
number 13, who was that guy?

I don't know. I bet someone on this thread does, however.
13 looks familiar but can't remember his name. Guy behind him is the late Bobby Doyle from RI. I think he ran like 2:15 marathon back in the day.
So I see a Bob Flora in the results. John's bro?
I'm sure Virgin appreciates being called "2693" (above).Does he post here?
Would #13 be Roland Davide from RI? He ran 2:15 or better in the marathon back then, and used to go head to head with Bobby Doyle all the time.
Also pleased to see in the photo that in addition to Mike Roche, there are three other of my Rutgers teamates: Ron Spiers who according to the old results placed 24th and the late Billy Sieben who was 25th that day in the same time as Spiers (both in the center in the third row) and Pete Davis (with the RU on his singlet just over Virgin's right shoulder). Not sure what "Peachtree" was doing up that close to the front as he is not listed as having finished in the top 50!
And I see in the results my old training partner Amby Burfoot placed 48th, but can't find his bearded and white painter's cap topped head anywhere - just like Amby to go out modestly and then pick guys off.
Thanks for posting the great photo.
Lorenzo: Bob is John's twin brother. They both ran at Northeastern University. As I recall when they were at Ledyard High School in CT, Bob never won a race because John always beat him, that is until the Connecticut State Croos Country Championship his senior year when John stumbled at the start, Bob went out and took the lead, and posted his first victory ever over his twin bro that day.
#13 is Mike Buckley - went to Northeastern.
Is that Jeff Galloway to the left of Bruce Robinson in the picture? Top of his head.
Damn you guys are good! I was wondering who the kid in the Rutgers uni was. Thanks.

Any of you old timers going to be in Falmouth this year? I am planning to run the course on Saturday (in an hour or so) and watch the young ones race on Sunday.
I hear malmo will be in town for the festivities.
I mis-spoke - Ron Spiers is two guys behind Tom Fleming with only his forhead and eyes visible. Sorry, Malmo.
Is that Tom Fleming in the striped singlet three heads behind Tom Fleming?
Lots of hair back in '78! Well, except for Buerkle

No, but in the Let'sRun Training Talk banner ad at the top of the main page, instead of the smiling Craig Virgin that we all see, MarathonMind's computer only displays a growling Craig Virgin.
There is an added article at the bottom of the page that explains some of the timing difficulties in the race:

Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do.
Actually that article doesn't do much to explain the timing discrepancy. The "clock time" and the official times differ by anywhere from 16 to 30 seconds for the first 20 runners.
