Soccer players are not running non-stop for 90 minutes. Nowhere near it. When the are running it's generally 10-20 yards and out, with a lot of walking and standing around.

In previous studies reported as for elite adult soccer players, the distance covered every five minutes was 480-640 meters
(Reilly and Thomas, 1976, Withers, 1982, Bangsbo, 1994, Ekblon, 1991, Ohashi, 1991). thats 5 studies with a range of 480-640.
thats 8640-11520 meters per 90 minutes. so if some players are running close to 12k for a game, the ref is running more. might be close to 12 miles. especially since the ref has to get into position and such even when every else is "walking and standing around...."
