Kaki today made Peter Snell look great.
Agreed. Snell was ahead of his time. Also made Wohlhuter's run look v. special. I bet the track Kaki ran on was a mondo one and faster than what Rick would have run on in 1974! I'd say Wohlhuter's run would have been 0.5 faster if run on the same track as Kaki, and thus was slightly superior.
Cram's race in the wind back in '85 is probably the best 1k ever run. On his own for the last 400.[/quote]
Thing is the "windy conditions" were somewhat exaggerated by the commentators at the time, according to several witnesses on these boards who were there. And what wind there was would have been negated in the home stretch (apart from the last one obviously) due to drafting from the 2 rabbits he had. The wind would also have actually assisted him from behind in the back stretches.
He was already 0.4 behind Coe's phantom at 800m, and then fell further behind in the last 100m. If he wasn't ahead of Coe's time at 800 he wasn't going to do it.
Coe too had to run the last 400m alone, and that 3 days after solo running a 3:31 off a 52 first 400.
Coe's run better than Cram's. 0.7 is about 5m, a long way at that level.
