Don't recall that, but do remember Cram (50.9) and Coe (51.0 - in a lot of traffic) finishing faster in a 3:41 at the Europeans in 86. Also Bile and Coe running 51 and bits in the 89 World Cup, which was in a much faster overall time (3:35).
Also, think the quickest in an international is the 87 European Cup when Gonzales ran 50.0 and Cram c. 50.2. I think the winning time there was about 3:45.
Also remember Morceli running under 52.0 a few times.
