Today is Liane's birthday. Anyone know if she is still
living?
There was a fairly recent thread about Dr Ernst van Aaken
in which her training came up. At one point she was alternating 30KM and 20KM runs.

I haven't heard that she died. I suspect if she had it would have been mentioned in Track&Field News. If she is dead she should be immortalized for her first words after winning at Boston which were, "Can somebody get me a beer? I'd really like a beer."
Maybe you recall the photograph of her in the "van Aaken Method". There are a couple of men riding bicycles nearby and a pregnant sow in the foreground.
The picture of the sow is appropriate because that particular chapter is "Diet for a small runner". I wonder if one of the cyclists was her pacer and/or coach?
Van Aaken was her coach so I don't think they were her coach. Could be pacers or just spectators. I do recall the photo.
My aunt Liane passed away this past weekend on Sunday evening 1/17. I was googling her, I never realized how accomplished she really was in the running circles. Any memories would really be appreciated!

Sorry to see this. My condolences. I doubt many people outside of Germany had heard of her before she won Boston and set the world record. She didn't keep the record for long and I can't recall seeing her name in any other race for years. Then I saw a mention that she'd run a 100 km race on an island in the North Sea, Silt, perhaps? After her win at Boston there was a description of her training that I thought was interesting. I think I tried doing the same thing for a while. RIP
Liane Winter is a Marathon Legend most here might not have heard of. RIP

Thank you, I've forwarded your messages to her sisters. I knew she was a marathon runner but didn't think much of it growing up! She received flowers and messages every birthday from organizations so it was nice when I found this thread and that folks still remember her and her accomplishments!
Liane Winter was already a great Marathon runner when the just allowed women into the German Marathon Championships in 1975. She won in 1979.

I just read her Wikipedia page. It said she ran the Maryland Marathon in 1975. I ran that race as well. I had no idea she was there. After I read your post here I put a post onto a Facebook page that's mostly populated by runners of her and my ages. She's quite well remembered there. Did this come as a surprise?
She didn't live in the same town as we all did (Wetzlar, Germany), we would see her for visits and vacations. I'm sure it was that generation, it was just known she did really good at running marathons so definitely a surprise, a bit sad that I just now found al this out, would have been great to talk to her about it. She came back home where all her sisters live and was in the hospital/ nursing facility for the last few years there. They cleaned out her room today and found the Boston marathon gold medal, so neat!
Anyone sharing memories in the facebook group? If so, could I join? My name on FB is Tracy Ann Isaacs if you wouldn't mind inviting me, I'm sharing all this info back home with my mom and other aunts.
I'll go there now and try. There actually haven't been loads of memories as much as
"likes" and sad emojiis to my announcement. And I'm not sure how it works getting someone into the group but I will work on it. I will send you a message from FB, I'm Rich Englehart
There are several people there with your name, none from Germany. I'm pretty sue I need to know exactly who you are to get you an invite. Are you the one in Florida? I'm guessing that's the "FL" in your name here.
Mein tiefstes Beileid an Sie und Ihre Familie. Sie war eine Meisterin!
It seems that I can only invite you to the FB group if we're friends there. As there are several people with your name there I don't know how to get one to you. So send one to me, Rich Englehart and we'll get you in. There are a few more memories and comments turning up.
Thanks Rich, which one are you? I see a few of you pop up when I search our name. I'm in Florida, there's a turtle in my picture
Vielen Dank, wie kennen sie meine Tante? Sorry mein deutsch ist nicht mehr so gut. Meine Oma und Liane waren beide von Leipzig und dann nach Wetzlar gezogen.
I did not know there were multiple mes. I'll find the turtle and send you the request.
I did not see a picture of a turtle, but I saw several of seals or sea lions as well as mentions of Florida and Hessen and sent a request there. That has to be you, right?
