I'll admit Andrews is a better racer in slow, sit and kick races (1:47+), and Wheating is better at faster races 1:45 - 1:46). If it came down to a kickers race, running high 1:46.xx I think Wheating would win.

But Wheating is NOT a winner. Think of how many times he has placed second. I can see Andrews winning and I can also see him finishing way back. I only see Wheating coming in second, but third at worst. He will not winner. Either Andrews or a dark horse. Winning is just not in Wheating's nature.
over 800m yea are probably right but to [generally] state Wheating is not a winner....how many times has he lost in a 1500/ mile this year?
I watched the last leg a couple of times. I think its a
S T R E C H to say that Andrews OOWWWWNNSSSS Wheating. I believe Wheating might have more actual talent, but I think its clear from the video that Andrews ran a better race. Andrews made Wheating run Andrews' race (a slow 55 first 400). but Wheating's error was trying to go with 300 remaining and he ended up running in lane 2 around the final turn. Thats 4 very unnecessary meters and could have made the difference in time had Wheating run a better tactical race. I think Andrews, though younger, is a better race manager. Wheating seems to still be running by the seat of his pants.
Yeah and Andrews is a freshman... Wheating is an Olympian.
Of course he's ran a 3:59. He's a SR with 3 NCAA titles under his belt and is a 6 time All American. He should be able to hold off a freshman.
Totally owned.

So by this logic no senior should ever lose to a freshmen? That means Garrett Heath, Lee Emanuel, Dorian Ulrey, etc should ass be ashamed of themselves because they lost to German last year in the 1500m.
Check out Robby's reaction after the indoor race. Jersey boy!!
Andrews is a a fudge packer!
andrews has probably been running longer than wheating.
DEFINITELY run more races

San Diego Texan wrote:All you guys talk about Wheating and Andrews is ridiculous. NEITHER is the best. Look at Mac Fleet's weekend! Only guy that ran ALL 3 races, and his 800 time was faster than both of them. And talk about someone that knows how to race!!! He will win either the 800 or 1500 at NCAA's....just a case of where Vin puts him,.
His time was the fastest because he was on a leg that didn't go out slow, YA TARD!
Hmmm...I always thought the fastest guy was the best. Guess all the World Records are useless, seeing as the really fast guys probably always go slow just to win. Idiot...
Bump. There is a 'tard on this board and it isn't San Diego Texan.
I have to agree that Mac Fleet looks like a better racer than Robby Andrews. In retrospect, it was too bad that Fleet didn't have that 4th leg, so he could have shown his heels to Andrews. Andrews is good...a "fighter", but I don't see him going very far. Guys like him, who win only when they have a chance to use their great sprint burn out pretty quickly. They begin to rely on their sprint, and forget that there is always a new guy out there who can outsprint him.

wheating seems to only know one strategy in the 800 and that is to sit and kick. the problem has been the timing of it. he waits too long or gets in a bad position tactically and someone else cleans up the scraps. he is not a natural front runner and i can't see him beating andrews using that tactic. andrews is a natural when it comes to timing the kick, he strikes at just the right time. i think at ncaa's wheating will need a rabbit to win. if no one goes out hard he is a sitting duck again for andrews.
I agree with this completely. Truth is, Andrews might be able to get Wheating 9/10 times in a slow (relative to a 1:45 guy) race. I don't think Wheating can do much about it unless he goes very hard with 300 to go, possible Robby can't come back on that, but maybe he does.
If someone pushes a 1:46low or faster pace, Wheatings chances improve dramatically. Making a world team? At this point my bet would be on Wheating over Andrews 9/10 times. A slow college race, my bet is on Andrews over Wheating 9/10 times. One thing is for sure as of now, Andrews has the upper hand on instincts and on a short kick off a slow pace. Wheating has the upper hand on the gas tank.
It's very possible that Wheating could take down Symmonds in a race, and that Andrews can take down Wheating again in a race. And yet if Andrews was in the race with Symmonds and Wheating he may be a few seconds behind.
And though there are no worlds this year there is the U.S. championships so we'll have a glimpse of both opportunities fairly soon. One thing is for sure, Andrews has the upper hand on instincts and a short kick of a slow pace. Wheating has the upper hand on the gas tank.
You are a very dopey man. Wheating is simply not on Symmonds level. Symmonds would not be losing these baby races. And if Andrews could ABSOLUTELY TOOL on a guy who runs a 1:45 he can surely run in the neighborhood of that time. Lastly, Wheating should not try a long kick, its not in his bag of tricks. His best shot at beating Andrews was staying behind him until the last 50 meters and he was in position to do this at Penn. Every move he made in this race has I'm SCARED AS CRAP of Andrews written all over it. Oregon actually won the third leg but Wheating was so slow on the take and I think it was intentional so he could draft off Andrews. Then that move Wheating made on the final backstraight was once again extreme FEAR of the freshmen coupled with some desperation. At least this way he could make it looked like he tried. It would have been even more embarrassing a loss if the freshman straight up held him off for the last 250 meters. The truth is I think Wheating was scared Andrews could beat him in this fashion.

they both split 1:47.78. Andrews outkicked Wheating but they still ran the same time. Wouldn't say thats ownage
When you beat someone you own them. And he's BEAT wheating twice i dont care what splits they ran.

So did Rupp "OWN" Ritz last year after USAs? Webb has beat Lagat at 1500, does he own him? Look, Bekele better watch out for Lagat in a 13:15 5K, but he won't have to worry about him much in a 12:40 5K.
How about "Andrews has owned Wheating in the past 2 slow 800s"? You might want to wait until they get with 2.5 seconds of Wheatings PR to see if you can throw the Own term around. Most likely it'll depend on the kind of race they're in to decide the winner.
I hope the several 800 runners quietly going about their business this season eat both these guys for breakfast.
In this event you gotta watch your back!!! So if you run like a fool in the back, you deserve someone beating you at your supposedly reliable tried and true method. Symmonds racing style gets you left in the dirt on the big stage.
Go for it from the gun, get out there and make it a race for Gods sake! I am sick of these controlling-the-race types.
Bring on the super dudes!!!!
Is Wheating calling Andrews "Virginia"? He either really doesn't like him or maybe they are very close!
“I made a dumb move and I paid for it,” he said. “I got impatient. I should have waited and stayed on Virginia’s shoulder ... coming off the final turn, I was feeling good, but 20 meters out, I started running out of gas, and he came up on my shoulder and caught me.”
Wow, watching that video of Andrews almost losing on the front page today made me realize that Andrews really only has about a 60 meter strong kick, which he can stretch out to about 80 meters. His weakness is exposed. Likeliness at an ncaa title in a 1:46 race, not high.
You discovered his weakness by watching him again beat someone with a faster PR?
