A 1:02:21 second half at Boston. I wonder how that compares historically? That is insane.

Hall is not going to win a major marathon ever. take out the kenyans and ethiopians and Hall will win. his running strategy is not good enough to win. people are going to surge and surge and surge and if he is not ready to go with them he will be left behind and it will be too late to catch up.
Bingo
need a tack mentality to win the marathon, he doesn't have it. he can be out goumri
Hall is still figuring out strategy. He needs to find the middleground between todays smart pacing and last years ridiculous surging if he wants to win. Obviously he is fast enough. Meb has an oly medal and a wmm title and will probably never break 2:09. Great run for them today. Normally 4th would be a let down but considering how fast the race was I am impressed.
Gotta respect R. Cheruiyot. That time would be a 2:04 in Rotterdam or Berlin. His training partner(Vincent Kipruto) just ran 2:05:13 last week in Rotterdam. So looks like Cheruiyot got inspired by Kipruto's time.
Cosmos Ndeti ran 1:02:15 in 1994. Andres Espinosa ran 1:02:19 in closing.
A side note, a lot was made about Ndeti closing his final mile in 4:28 but Espinosa closed his final in 4:20 trying to catch Ndeti.

If Hall had caught Merga would Merga have followed his philosophy and dropped out with meters to go?
Anyone know where Hall's time puts him all time at Boston. I know he has fastes American time.. but what about overall? Is there a list somewhere?

Actually, you could leave most of the East Africans in and Hall would be winning at least some of these races. The race he could have won was NY last year, but, otherwise every major he's been in has had someone in it who was another level above him, and usually more than one such. Ryan Hall is great but he will never run the sort of race we saw from the winner today: 1:03:30 and 1:02:21 at Boston is un - frackin - real. I don't know if I could drive my car that fast on that course. I think Ndeti might have run a 1:02:xx in the second half of one of his wins, but not after going out in 1:03 (obviously...). After Beijing, this may be the best performance in marathon history. Anyway, as long as there are, in every race, 10 Africans of about Ryan's ability and 5 of significantly better ability, the odds of Ryan winning are miniscule.

Good one.
I was out on the course today watching at the 20 mile mark. It was pretty awesome! A friend and I ran part of the course this morning and as soon as we started running we noticed the perfect conditions, including what felt like about a 10 mile per hour tailwind. It swirled a bit at times, but for the most part it felt like a perfect day for this course. We actually both commented that if someone has a good day the course record could be in trouble. Of course we didn't expect 2:05!!! Not taking away from the performances today, but I'd say this was a 1:30-2:00 wind for the elite guys based on what I felt out there.

Hall raised his arms in the last 100 yards when it became clear he wasn't going to pass Merga. Is anyone really going to hold it against Hall that he celebrated the fastest US time ever at Boston, not to mention following up a 1:04 half earlier this year with a 2:08 today?
IMO, a professional runner of Hall's credentials should not be celebrating if he isn't winning.
If I went out and popped a 2:08 marathon you could bet your ass I would celebrate regardless of the place.

Bob Kempainen was 2:08:47 so Hall beat his time by 6 seconds.
He met all his realistic goals regardless of how you judge his place and time. This sets up well for making an attempt at the AR in Chicago.
OK, for the men, and specifically Hall, you do not wave to the Wellsley girls while leading the lead pack, and then tank!!
You either stay in the back of the pack or take control.
Tactics!!!

Agreed. It was a great run by him and Meb, hopefully just a taste of what is to come for the Americans.
I would like to have seen what Meb could have done had he been 100%. Third place very likely, maybe even second.
