1500m is 1.5k (seems like a round distance)

Ban the 400m,800m, & 1600m races. They should be put in the 'run as far as you can for an hour' track event group.

The ancient Sumerians and Babylonians used a number system that had a base of 60 instead of 10. They would count to twelve on one hand using their thumb to touch each of the three segments on each of their four fingers (3x4=12) and split the day into 12 hours as well as the night. Also, 24 and 12 can each be easily divide into halves, thirds, and quarters. On the other hand (literally), they would use each of their 5 digits to hold one place that would represent a group of 12 and that would constitute the base of their numeric system (5x12=60). They naturally would then divide an hour into 60 minutes and a minute into 60 seconds. Currently however, a second is defined by the cycles of radiation of a cesium atom.
As far as the meter, it was initially equal to one ten millionth of the distance from the equator to the north pole but it has been revised to be equal to the length that light travels in a vacuum during 1/299,792,458 of an atomic second.
This why we prefer to run the 1500 meters timed with an atomic stopwatch versus running a mile timed by a sundial.
(And that would make more sense on a 500 meter track)
Dividing hours into 60 minutes and 1 minute into 60 seconds has something to do with the greeks having a numberical base of 60 and not 100 as the metric system would have it. The Canadian who invented the time zones (can't think of his name at the moment) then divided the Earth into 24 segments based on the position of the sun throughout the day. In other words, the sun would be at the same position at noon in New York City as it is at noon in Thailand.

I believe the track I ran on in HS was also 385 or so we had like a lap and some extra for the 400, and like 5 laps for the mile... i did not know there were any other tracks like that...
Think of the improved TV coverage based on track size. Since only the last lap of distance races is televised, increasing the lap to, say 5000 meters, would allow us to see quite a bit more.

well you obviously aint in real estate. a 500m track would eat up prime real estate. also it would make roddy haley a track god.
that f***er popped a sub 60 500m indoors at 0kc ncaa in 85 or 86 and the track was found short. he ran a 44.94 400m and was later arrested and jailed for possesion of a class a substance. i think that was the same meet where the 3k was 1 lap long.
