The first wear pointy hats the second have wide flat ones.
I can't help you distinguish between academics and intellectuals but they share one key similarity. Neither type would be caught dead posting on this board.
An academic gets paid to be a boring idiot. An intellectual does not.
Academics are frozen in the world of academia, never having to leave the cloistered world of the school campus. Most study things from a perspective of never having had to deal with realities, just theories. Thus, most find no conflict in finding eternal fault with individuals' free will to create wealth, which in America has created an environment that allows them (the academics) to have freedom of thought (never mind getting paid for it) to conjure up ideas that Marxist governments are far superior to free markets...the good news for academics is, we continue to let them scam us through ever higher tuitions and taxes.
Intellectuals on the other hand, come in a variety of forms, and, contrary to one poster above, might be very likely to post in a place like the Let's Run message board. The intellectual is more likely than the academic to want to explore a subject from any and all aspects to test theories and ideas against accuracy and truth (although there are plenty of disingeious intellectuals as well!....many of them academics!)
So pleased to hear the difference between an intellectual and an academic. I was married to an academic and he was not as described on here, the best type of academic a modest man. I on the other hand was classed as an intellectual.
So thank you all for the definition. An academic and an intellectual can live in perfect harmony, as we did for 7 years until he died.

An academic is a stupid liberal in academia that believes in some central dogma and an intellectual is just about everyone else.
Academic- Reddit
Intellectual- Letsrun
Academic-D1 Running Club Runner
Intellectual- Road Racer
I guess academics require staying in touch with academia while intellectuals do intellectual work.

The term academic relates to institutions of higher education. It has nothing to do with one's political views. Engineering professors, math professors, and business school professors are
just as much academics as those in humanities depts.
Intellectuals are interested in ideas and critical or deeper thinking. Intellectuals can be found in all walks of life, but some are also academics.

DNA to mRNA to protein
Intellectuals might have an increased knowledge in areas that are not taught coherently in an accessible academic setting. A lot of intellect comes with finding answers to your own questions stemming from learnt topics. Academia can be a spring board for some. For others reading and studying without a formal education can increase ones intellect. Intellectuals might also be more apt to problem solving in everyday life. Self managed actors, managers, some politicians to an extent and self employed people who are successfully might be considered intellectual but not necessarily academic.
An intellectual thinks up ideas. An academic trades in the ideas of others.

Bravo
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things.” - Steve Jobs
When, in recent history, has an academic contributed anything meaningful that changed the world?
