Pedestrian type events still take place in the US. Below are the results from one of the best-organized events, the Sri Chinmoy 10 and 6 Day Events. Of particular note, Rimas Jakelaitas' 600 mile/6 Day split on his way to 901 miles in 10-days.
This is not meant to stir-up the debate on the legitimacy of ultrarunning. It is simply a notable accomplishment. As one who still races consistently at distances from 1/2 marathon (1:09 - 1:12) through standard ultras (50 mile in 6:15) to multi-day races (Trans-America/10-Day Race) my take on the whole debate is that each distance presents its own challenge. PR'ing at the marathon is no less or more difficult than PR'ing at 100 miles, 24 hours or 6-Days. Discipline, dedication, passion, and more than a bit of craziness define the process. Regardless of distance. The fun is the absurdity of any and all of it.
