Innocent until proven guilty. This is the foundation of our legal system.

In the 1930's and 40's the appeals lasted 18 months. Justice delayed is justice denied. So I'm leaning away from capital punishment if it takes too long (aside from the cost). I don't believe criminals who have done heinous crimes against the public should be given living conditions better than that of our poor.

Trust me, far less innocent people have been executed (for crimes they didn't commit) than people who have been violated by criminals who get away from punishment. Prosecutors and cops who frame innocent defendants deserve the sentence the defendants would have received. All in all, justice will be served in this life or the next.

Lets be honest. Hot white women are much more valued in society than other people. If your a hot white woman you can land a job easily with almost no credentials for that job. If you are a hot white woman, you have a good shot at marrying a rich NBA player or being a mistress to a Pro golfer. No one wants the yappy Hispanic or the uppitty Black female. It's all about white chicks. The younger and hotter the better.

Call me cynical, but would all you that are outraged by this care or pay attention if this was a young black or hispanic girl? Or is everyone so outraged because she' was a rich white girl?

I'm honestly curious by this, because this makes national news...but how many horrific murders do those of us who DON'T live in nice neighborhoods hear about every day?

Right, we should just have compassion toward these misguided individuals who rape and kill underage girls. They're just crying out for help, after all.

Is is possible to be conservative and think rationally without being ruled by pure emotion -- usually anger? Let's cease with the medieval fantasies and just mourn the loss of one of our own. This is just incredibly sad.

But the reason people want to see him killed is that he has done this before, was given an opportunity to serve prison time and get released, and he went out and killed someone. Why should we pay taxes to house, feed, and clothe a guy who will spend the rest of his days in jail?

I'm sorry that the girl is dead, and I hope that justice is done.

As for other runners' better insuring their safety:

1) A cell phone is not a bad idea, particularly if you're going to be running (especially if alone) in an infrequently-traveled area. If you fall or otherwise get hurt, you might be able to call and get help. It could be a lifesaver.

2) However, about the only help a phone could be in case of an assault would be if you could throw it hard enough (and luckily enough) to disable the attacker. But these men almost always attack from behind (or the blind side) and knock their victim down--not even an opportunity to throw the phone, much less make a call from it. And rarely an opportunity to put up much of a fight.

3) So your best bet is to run in areas that are pretty heavily trafficked and/or always to run with a partner.

4) I do agree that running without headphones is an aid to safety, regardless of the runner's sex or running venue.
