I'll answer that question. The point is......Hundreds of black and hispanic kids go missing every year, and you dont hear SHIT from the media!!!!!! When a white girl/boy goes missing or gets killed it makes national news. This BULLSHIT has been going on for years!! I'M IN MY FORTIES AND I CANT REMEMBER ONE CASE WHERE A BLACK MISSING CHILD MADE NATIONAL NEWS. You got Amber Alerts, Meagan's Law and a bunch of other crap. In this white racist society, a black life is not important. By reading the news, you would think black children NEVER get kidnapped and murdered. I guess I have to include black women also. I cant count the times the media saturated the airwaves with stories of missing white women. They covered the white girl missing in Aruba everyday allday on some stations. Now, name a case that got national attention of a black women missing?
This is something that gets under my skin. Any white person with a hint of honesty knows I'm telling the truth. If my daughter went missing, I would want the same attention brought to the case as some blonde, blue-eyed white girl.

You have a valid point in the abstract even though you amplify and thus distort it for purposes of effect. But making it repeatedly on this forum in light of the death of a young woman while running seems extremely misguided - even giving your motivations every benefit of the doubt. I cannot name any runner - not any real runner at least - who would differentiate on the basis of sex or race or age in the face of such an event.

I thought about this the other day when I left my house for my run- No one knew where I planned to do my run, how long I'd be gone, what clothes I had on...if something was to happen to me I would be missing for hours before anyone knew it, plenty of time for someone to get me far from home or worse.
To all the girls out there, if you live on your own make sure someone knows these details when you head out for a run. Even if you must leave a note in your house, I'm sure if something was to happen investigators would be grateful to have a little bit of info.
I have told all of girls I coach in the past to never run alone, for all safety reasons (injuries, getting lost, etc), but now I am going to require that they carry their cell phones with them on their runs. Any parents of daughters of ANY age should suggest this to their runner. It may be a hassle and I may look stupid but it may help sometime- it could also help someone else too if I saw something suspicious taking place.
I have considered carrying my phone before for the sake of injuries- a friend fell on a trail run and broke her hip and had to lay in the woods for a few hours before anyone else came running through. This plus this new story scare the crap out of me.

Coach, I am going to add to what you said with some common sense advice from a trained American miltary warrior.
A cell phone is nice but you probably will not have time to use it. A weapon is your best defense. In most cases the weapon is going to be YOU. If the person comes from the front with a weapon run the other way, not in a straight line, but zig zag and make yourself a small target. It is hard to hit a target straight on with a pistol, but even harder when the target is zig zagging. You need to know how to fight in order to kill or mame. In other words, go for the part of body that will end it. Stick your finger or thumb in their eye very deep. Grab the throat and squeeze the carotid arteries. Chop throat! Kick the groin area. Learn to fight back. Remember always go for the throat. Last move, if the person has you down bite out the jugglar. Always say to yourself "There is no way I am going without a fight".

Come on, don't you think you're exaggerating the real risk just a bit? There's no need for a girl to carry a cell phone with her on a typical afternoon run if she's traversing well traveled routes. I'm sure the hell not going to live my life fearing some psycho killer is lurking around the corner waiting to pounce. I was once a victim of a brutal attack - I survived using my wits and dexterity. I run alone all the time and frequently do so in the dark on deserted roads/trails. If I get attacked and killed, so be it. You can be damn sure the bastard will bear the signs of my resistance for many years thereafter.

As someone who worked with that population for a few years, this person is right.
I see a failed justice system here. This guy was not supposed to be out. I know if I was a lawyer and got this guy out in 6 years I would feel very ashamed, guilty and horrible about what happened. I would beg for forgiveness from the family and admit wrong doing. Obviously the lawyer/prosecutor didn't commit the crime but they are responsible for letting the animal out of the cage.
If I worked at a zoo and let out a lion and the lion killed a little girl, the lion should be put to sleep. But the gatekeeper should also be punished.
I'm just saying I don't see how a defense lawyer or whatever does their job when their job is to let off the scum of the earth.

No I don't think I'm exaggerating. Most people won't go to the convenience store or drive 10 miles down the road without carrying a cell phone with them "just in case"...why shouldn't I bring a phone with me while I'm running down the side of a road just in case? I know 99% of the time nothing will happen- but even if it is something as stupid as falling, getting hurt, and not being able to get back to my house, I'd rather call someone than jump into someone's car for a ride alone.
I am also not going to do of my runs in fear of being jumped by someone but it's not like you can't keep an eye out for weird things happening. I'd also be more likely to carry a phone on my runs that I do frequently than my odd ones. Apparently Chelsea King ran this loop around the lake all the time.

You are NOT exaggerating, in fact, you are very wise and your team is fortunate to have you as a coach. The girls on my XC & track teams NEVER run alone, and that includes from their homes - the parents see to it. I don't have them carry phones...yet. We keep the workouts fairly close to campus.
Several years ago my daughter and I trained at night (we're in Phoenix...heat etc.) until we learned that the first victim of a serial killer was found at the very spot we usually stopped to stretch. No more night running!
I also do not allow my athletes to wear any iPods or other such items, for safety reasons. Aural feedback is extremely important while running in the city.
