http://www.hokiesports.com/track/gallery/That starts at the mile line... Leeder "struck" first... it was incidental contact from both - all though Mulherin's on the video looks like he was trying to steady himself when he touched Leeder, and I said touched and not a push.... no way this should have been a DQ.
Mulherin "was trying to steady himself?" Laughable comment at best. Someone now has an entire sequence of photos (with unobstructed view, unlike the posted video) clearly showing Mulherin shoving Leeder with TWO hands and somehow this is simply Mulherin steadying himself, even though Mulherin never breaks strides or loses balance as some have claimed. Well deserved DQ for Mulherin.
Coach Cianelli's comments are great too:
“Whether I or anybody else thinks it was a good call is something we’re going to have to live with,” Cianelli said. “It’s a judgment call on the part of the official. What I saw was the Florida State runner tried to cut in without enough room, and Will put his hand out to try to keep from falling. I didn’t agree with the call but I’m not going to dwell on it and say that it cost us the meet.”
Coach Cianelli is "not going to dwell on it" but his assitants are going to verbally berate another ACC coach and the officials, and then send e-mails around to the rest of the ACC coaches, their AD's, and the ACC pleading for the decision to be overturned until the ACC finally tells Va Tech to shut the hell up, the referee's decision stands.
VaTech had no case at the track, the full photo sequence shows they have no case now, and the ACC video will put to rest the ridiculous notion that Mulherin was "steadying himself" from Leeder cutting in.

I stand corrected.
In this order the shove is even more blatant. Picture 4 has mulherin putting his hand up, Picture 5 putting his hand on Leeder's back, picture 6 pushing him away.
Make up your own mind.
The only thing definitive about the photo sequence is that Mulherin is an animal on the track. I'll be rooting for the kid outdoors. He's a bad ass.
It's pretty clear in these pictures that Leeder stays in Lane 2 or on the line between 1 and 2 throughout the whole incident. The idea of him "cutting-in" is really off base.

I think you mean jack
I wasn't at the meet but from an impartial observer it looks like the problem for Mulherin was that he was too aggressive in moving Leeder out of the space. It appears the left hand comes over his body to help move Leeder out the way. A better tactic for Mulherin would have been to use the outside of his right elbow to move Leeder out a little bit to avoid cutting in too much.
That left hand seems to indicate an exaggerated move.

First picture looks like Leeder's elbow going into Mulherin. While it doesn't justify an out-and-out shove, provides evidence that Leeder initiated the contact in the process of trying to pass Mulherin. If it's just his normal stride and not an intentional elbow-throw he should have swung wider to get past.

Huh? Did you watch the video? Or look at the pictures here:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/5506/sequencesmall.jpgThere are two pictures in which Leeder's RIGHT foot is even in the first lane. Clearly he was cutting too close.

In that sequence, there isn't even ONE picture of Leeder with his RIGHT foot in lane one AND every shot of his LEFT foot on the track is ON the lane line between 1 and 2. This wasn't the 200 meters where each person is supposed to be in their own lane. Shots 3-5 clearly show Mulherin looking at Leeder as he makes the illegal contact. Doesn't really help the case for unintentional/defensive contact.
Well, it appears that this dis confirms the magic bullet theory and therefore Mulherin WAS the second gunman on the grassy knoll.
Thank you.
Will Homestretch Observer just admit that he wants to be or is Coach Braman of Florida State?? Your accusations about what the VT runner's actions were after the race are insulting to anyone who was near the finishline/clerk area.
What struck me as a lack of class was Coach Braman crying like a 3 year-old to the official for the DQ after it appeared like nothing was going to be called.
I'm sorry, I forgive mulherin. I am a jackass.

Wow...a foot in lane 1 = cutting to close. Clearly you are an unseasoned racer...and blind. When you look at the photo sequence, the closest Leeder gets to lane one is the lane line between lane 1 & 2.
Mulherin busted, solid dq.
In the top left and bottom right pictures, Leeder's right foot is about to land at least on the line, meaning the whole rest of his body is cutting into the first lane. Even after he's been pushed (top right), his left foot barely makes it into lane 2. And then in bottom right photo he is elbowing in again. Sure, the shove was an overreaction of epic proportions, but still doesn't deserve a DQ.

No it doesn't mean "his body is cutting into the first lane." Leeder was running in a straight line, until shoved out by Mulherin. The fact that you claim the shove was an "overreaction of epic proportions" only helps the arguement that the DQ was appropriate. The shove was an overreaction, caused Leeder to break stride and lose momentum, and gave Mulherin an unfair advantage since he now had the room to make a move through the inside instead of going wide thereby allowing him to win a race he otherwise wouldn't have won. DQ upheld

Uh... I am not connected to this at all, and really couldn't care less about these two teams, but the VT guy is moving into lane 2 in photo 41. Is he trying to run FSU into the outside wall?
He has PLENTY of room in all of these pictures, and it is clear that FSU was NOT trying to cut in at all. He is in lane 2 in ALL of these photos.
Both schools suck, I say throw them both out of the ACC. They belong in the SEC or something. No class.
Hahahaha. Mulherin is pretty much owned by that sequence of photos. He is basically trying to tackle the kid from FSU.
Listen, I understand school pride and all, but c'mon.
He might be a good guy, but this DQ was deserved.
The only question that i have is how i change my vote on the poll. Initially, from that video, I thought he had tried to cut in too early. Now i can see that i was wrong. i need to change my vote. Can i do so?
as a neutral observer Leeder was at fault and Mulherin should keep his title.

Okay, i am open to hearing this... How was he at fault?
First off- leeder is a goofy kid, no doubt, but I am in no way convinced his elbow sticking in mulherin's side is "just how he runs." Check any other picture of the dude running.
Second- the only person who's "stride is broken," is mulherin. The kid nearly has to step off the track in pic 5 of the sequence. Unless you want to argue that he's just loading up to knock leeder into the warmup area (perfectly reasonable...)
Mulherin/VT are ACC champs.
