no need to put up peoples fb pages. another view....how close were you to the incident? my guess is most of the people here were watching from across the track. anyone who was at the line it should be clear that leeder was the cause of the incident and at fault. mulherin's "violent push" was no more than holding leeder off of him.
Shit happens. The real test will be outdoor when everyone has a chance to prove who the real winners are.
Anybody that was at the line was a coach. If you're a coach, you should get to practice.

I heard the VT runner in question call an FSU coach "a f*cking cock" and the coach simply tell a VT coach to get his athlete under control.
The AD from Virginia Tech must be soo proud of his coach and his athletes - so must the ACC.
I heard this too. As an alum I can only apologize to the officials and coaches who were subjected to such a display of poor sportmanship from a VT runner. In sports, calls sometime go against you - it's how you handle those moments that define you. I trust the coaches are working with him on a public apology for his outburst, and their own behavior in the wake of the meet.
An embarrassment to all athletes who have represented VT.
Can't blame the kid for being pissed about a lame DQ. Most people on this board would react the same way if they won a conference championship to have it stripped for something so small

No. You do not act that way. I am sorry. Sociopaths cannot control their fits of rage, that is what a display like this reminds me of, sociopathy.
I would be angry, yes, and would appeal the decision. I bet his loss of the appeal had something to do with the way he acted, even if it was subconscious.
If you act this way, it is b/c you are emotionally stunted. Grow up.
not to flame here, but really? act calm and appeal? if you get dq'd after ripping an awesome hate-fueled last lap to win a conference championship, your emotions are gonna be running on high. and this is a college kid, not a 40 year old with life all figured out emotionally. his reaction is not strange or odd at all. when you are that passionate, you are gonna be fired up. part of competition and being young
No, I ran at that level, in that exact race about 10 years ago, I understand emotion.
You don't go cursing coaches, I am sorry.
There is a difference between passion and total lack of respect.
I am not flaming either, thanks for your civility. Rare around here.

If it was only a heat of the moment thing, then an athlete with any class at all would eventually calm down and realize the value of a public apology for his actions that took place in a public arena - and reflected badly on himself, his team, his coaches, and his school.
actually...there were plenty of people that are not coaches on the infield. me included.
I ran in the ACC as well and vividly remember a race when I moved out a half a step on the homestretch of an indoor meet and a guy tripped trying to pass me. A sprint coach from his team was screaming DQ. Luckily the guy popped up and finished just a second back and told his coach to cool it. If it was the sprint coach screaming DQ at a distance event right in this kids ear when he finished, I can see why he may retaliate. Most of us knew the other distance coaches and know that would only happen if it was blatant. I am sure the kid has apologized for losing his cool. Just a tough situation all around because of what it cost VT in the team title (note: I did not run for VT or FSU)

No he did not appologize.
Mulherins celebration
Mully: Yea! (hugs coach)
Me: Good for him
Mully: Yea Boi! (flexes)
Me: um alright
Mully: Yeaaaa (more flexing)
Me: Man that would suck if this kid got dq'd
Mully: I like...(as he proceeds to get a chant going with the VT crowd)
VT: Dick!!
Thats more or less how it went down
With a ton of accusations being written I will give what I know of Will. Will is definitely a passionate runner and a great guy (and nice). A guy from a small Virginia high school that never broke 4:30 in the 1600 meters in high school (did run 9:31) he has worked hard to being one of the best guys in the ACC. The 3K was the last event prior to the 4x400 and he needed to go out and win for his team to most likely win the ACC Team Title. He did. Look at him in the picture at the finishline. Passion, heart and the distance guy won it for the team with everything on the line. Total elation! After the race he was distraught but did not go after the FSU coaches and swear out them. Will the kind of guy that mutters and swears under his breath in the corner. Iwas n't by him so cannot say what he said, but I also know only his own coaches were next to him. He didn't go after any FSU coach to give him a piece of his mind. He represented the Hokies very well.
It is clear there was no foul from the picture and video and when the ACC Select video comes out which should be much better looking at the angle of their camera set up (high up and looking down the straightaway)- it will be even more clear. Will doesn't even push the other runner but has his hand out to steady himself. Watch it again and hopefully we will all get to see the ACC Select video.
All the FSU posters, FSU's Coach Braman and the few other bashers (probably Coach Bramen himself as he is a fairly often internet poster on the Florida High School site; hopefully not contributing to this mess, probably just a troll) along with the VT asst coaches can learn from the NC State 3K runner that was edged at the line. Martinez (the NC State runner), a class act offered Will his ACC Championship medal. Will team mates had to find him as he was in the locker room dejected from what happened. From the ultimate high to the ultimate low. He came out and shook hands with the NC State runner but politely turned it down. So thumbs up to Will's fantastic race and big time finish, thumbs up to Martinez of NC State who is a great sportsman and ran terrific race making it hard, and finally thumbs up to the FSU runner, Leeder who ran a gutsy race for his team after already running the mile ealier. Thumbsdown to Coach Braman of FSU for not leaving the officials alone from the mile on. He still complaining about the mile on the FSU website. Thumbsdown to the VT asst coaches for losing their cool. Thumbsdown to the head referee for not getting the coaches under control ealier. They did reprimand Braman and one the asst VT coaches but waited to long.
I have been to a clinic to listen to Coach Bramen as one of the guest speaker and I like that he gives credit to where it is earned (like Coach Harvey excellent coaching) but this behavior was not expected. The same for the VT assistant coaches, they need to keep their cool in an unfair situation and not lose it. But that would be hard to do for most of us. I like track because it is decided by who ran faster, jumped higher or further and by the best throwers. Unfortunate here a blown call was made and feel Coach Braman won the ACC for his guys, not the other way around. His constant hounding of the officials finally paid off. At least the Clemson women can definitely be called the ACC Champions without any hesitation. They were tremendous. One thing for sure - there was a lot of passion about track and field and kids competing at a high level after multiple events to help their team.
The subtitle on the Florida State website says that they dominated the competition to win the men's title.
Is FSU going to have to give this one back in a few years?
Thank you for this thoughtful, compassionate response to the immense amount of shallow, infantile drivel.
ACC Notes:
1) Neither athlete should have been DQ'd - that was pretty standard racing.
2) Mulherin does have a sweet beard.
3) Braman needs to keep his emotions under control. Ranting and raving and yelling at the officials on more than one occasion during multiple races isn't acceptable. Vent your frustrations through the proper avenues, not by verbalizing them during the meet.
4) VT needs to build an add-on to their facility to house a proper warm-up area, especially if it's always going to be cold and snowy every time I'm in Blacksburg. Great track though.
5) I heard BC had to make the 12 hour drive after their flights were cancelled at the last minute - pretty unfortunate.
6) UVA's milers were a little underwhelming. Also, Sintayehu Taye seems to be on a warpath every time he races - very physical runner.
7) Robbie Andrews is a freaking stud. End of story.
8) Virginia Tech's distance athletes know how to win championship races; they've been dropping huge finishes in every ACC distance event for the past year or so. Impressive, considering no one really ever talks about this team. Probably because they can't match these performances during cross country.
9) Bobby Moldovan looked like a machine in the slow heat of the 3k. That had to have been the first time he ran a good race since last year. Where has he been the past 6 months?
10) UNC's milers looked pretty good - they have a freshman who knows how to run, making both the mile and 800 final, the last of which was a result of a last-second dive. Gutsy.
11) Duke looks a little better than previous years. Cory Nanni still can't win the big one though. Maybe he'll get some redemption at IC4A's. They could have a fairly competitive DMR with McDermott, Beach, Nanni and some other 400 leg.
12) As far as FSU having to give back the championship in a few years - that's a funny thought. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
This video (shot by the NC State coach) clearly shows Mr. Mulherin shoving Matt Leeder of Florida State. It seems like a pretty clean cut case.
umm i think you posted the wrong link.. that's not the meet. can you post the real vid please? thx
