Yikes. That's quite the slaughter.

They were just trying to teach them a lesson for beating Bulgaria 82-0.
check out one of the comments from that articel
"This is absolutely pathetic on the part of Slovakia, as well as the other two teams that piled up goals on Bulgaria. To be in a situation like that would not be fun, exciting, or even rewarding. I can't wait to see Slovakia get smoked by LEGITIMATELY good teams. That coach should be embarrassed. And my props out to Bulgaria- they could have (and maybe should have) forfeited after the first period. But boy, if they ever got one past the Slovakian goaltender, it would have been epic."
nice call
So this means Canada would beat Bulgaria about 100 to 0.
82-0? Holy crud that's an average of almost 1.4 goals per minute. I can't even imagine that being fun for anyone playing or watching. In any case, I can't wait for the inevitable matchup of Canada vs. America in the finals. Should be exciting.
The Slovaks had it coming. Congrats to Canada for laying the heavy lumber.
The winter olympics is a joke: women's hockey is hokey with obscene scores like the ones above. Short-track speed skating is a crap shoot, the best man doesn't always win. And wassup with style points for freestyle moguls: downhill meets figure skating. Luge is insanely unsafe.
At least the women downhillers are cute.
Slovakia have 260 female hockey players in total, compared to Canada's 82000.

And a small group of them thought it was appropriate to score 82 goals on another team. They deserved their drubbing.
Honestly, women's hockey should not be in the Olympics. Nobody gives a flying f*** about it except Canada and the US, and even then, nobody watching it cares, it's just there's actually women in Canada/US that play hockey. In my opinion, they should take women's hockey out of the Olympics, and just get Canada and US to play a best of 9 series or something every 2 years. I don't know, that seems better than Canada beating teams 20-0.
I think I'd actually rather watch Curling.

That's a good point. Pretty much hockey is to Canada what running is to Kenya, but maybe to a lesser degree. Growing up, I would guess that 1-2 out of 3 of the kids I knew would be playing hockey. (Wierdly enough though, Canada's "official" national sport is lacrosse, which is way less popular/profitable. But I digress.)
Congrats to the Canadian women, they're looking really solid. But honestly though, I think that if the score is reaching the double digits by the first period or so, it's akin to being lapped on the track. If someone's being lapped in international competition, they'd likely be pulled from the track, right? Would it be justifiable to shut down the game if a team is insanely running up the score like the Canadians vs. Slovaks or the ridiculous Slovaks vs. Bulgaria game?
Actually, both hockey and lacrosse are recognized as the official sports of Canada.

Oh, right on, never knew that. Thanks for the update! Guess things have changed since I was a kid!

Sweeden has come onto the scene as a legitimate team as well - they beat the Yanks in Turin in the playoffs.
US men vs Switzerland
Canada vs Norway Tomorrow
This is what I'm interested in.
Women's hockey should be in the Olympics, but until the rest of the world catches up a bit, there should only be about six teams. There's no point in punishing teams that are really good by not having the sport in.
Did the Slovaks comment after the game? Were they just having an "off night?"

Correct. The Slovaks here are equivalent to the U.S. in world-level XC.
I'm Canadian and a big hockey fan, and I don't think women's hockey belongs in the Olympics. Not until there's better parity. Right now it's a bit of a joke, with a bunch of lopsided games as preludes to a predetermined battle between Canada and the US.
When 6-8 teams are legitimately competitive with each other, that's when they should bring women's hockey to the games.
