First race since Berlin marathon (and injury that I picked up 6 weeks later) for me today. Really have been looking forward to getting back to racing, but no idea what kind of shape I\'m in. First things first, this is a brilliant race. Very well organised, excellent marshalling. Dewsbury Road Runners put on one of the best 10k races in the country imho. Topography is almost exactly the same as Leeds, slightly up on the way out, round a cone and back. With this in mind, decided to go out reasonably hard, but hold a fraction back for the turnaround and return portion.
Splits (Garmin 405) as follows (split - cumulative - avg pace)
1km - 3:17 - 3:17 - 3:17
2km - 3:20 - 6:37 - 3:19
3km - 3:21 - 9:58 - 3:19
4km - 3:26 - 13:24 - 3:21
5km - 3:27 - 16:51 - 3:22
6km - 3:13 - 20:04 - 3:21
7km - 3:09 - 23:13 - 3:19
8km - 3:16 - 26:29 - 3:19
9km - 3:16 - 29:45 - 3:18
10km - 3:13 - 32:58 - 3:18
10.061km - 0:09 - 33:07 - 3:17
Overall, very happy with that one. Second fastest 10k I\'ve ever run, so as a first race back, I\'ll take that as a good sign. On reflection, think that perhaps I should have gone out a little harder, but it was nice to be able to run a big negative split (16:51, 16:16) and as a consequence caught a group and got past all of them, dropping the last chap during the final km.
Few messages from the tail-end of last weeks thread.......
Portland - Think it depends on how the next couple of months go. Think there\'s plenty of time to get into sub-2:40 shape, but there\'s nothing wrong with just doing 1 marathon per year.
2TM - damn, really sorry to hear about the ongoing woes with your hip/hamstring. It\'s an absolute bugger when you\'re in the middle of a spell like this. Keep the faith, everything will sort itself out sooner or later, just do whatever you can that helps the issue and don\'t try and force anything.
A_J - great to hear you\'re going to be at Berlin too. Have you done it before? It\'s an awesome race. Main target between now and then is the Wilmslow 1/2M in March. It\'s the English Champs again this year, as it was last year, which makes for good depth - I was the last runner under 72mins last year and finished 40th. Have got 3 10k races in the run up, would hope to get a PB at one of those.
BB - oh crap, not great news. Take it easy, perhaps soaking it in a really hot bath might help. Hang in there mate.
In terms of flats, for the marathon I favour Asics DS Racer, for all shorter distances I really like Nike Zoom Streak Racer, which I don\'t think they make anymore, but I\'ve got one last pair still in a box.
