it says he competed in england for who knows how long, and he is in at least his 3rd season here.... how is this possible that he didn't run out of eligibility yet?

Old Joe is up to his same old tricks at Butler. Seems he would rather pickup a 21+ kids (there is more than just Lee on his roster) then take a chance on a 18yoa red blooded American. I'm sure he is selling ALB all over the UK as the training local for Paula.
I think it is absurd what is going on with some of these old athletes. I am completely for having foreigners in the NCAA, i think it is great and it gives some people who probably wouldn't have the opportunity a chance to get a college degree. But lets remember why 100% of people are in College, to get an education. I'm sure Lee Emanuel is a great guy, a great competitor, and would have been a valuable asset to any DI team when he was 18-23 years old. But now he is old enough to be a seasoned pro and he is racing against kids 2-7 years younger and reaping the benefits. How many 18 year old kids (I don't care where they are from, they could be from England) aren't getting a scholarship (and now an education) because of Lee Emanuel. How many 1500m from his conference, region or whereever aren't getting a scholarship bc they have some stupid coach who says if you don't win a conference championship or don't go to nats you don't get a scholarship. This happens all the time and its just not fair that Lee Emanuel is so much older and experienced. He should be getting a paycheck not keeping other runners from scholarships.
Keith Gerrard is a junior who'll be 24 by season's end. Nicky Archer is 24, Carolyn Boosey is 25, Ashley Gibson will be 24 this month. U. New Mexico is working the system, loop-hole wise. Eventually the NCAA will have to re-do the rules to end the charade. All those athletes were in university in England running and racing during cross country and track seasons. But, they don't get charged with competition. It's bogus, man.
So Lee was at the very least TWENTY FOUR when he was CRUSHED by an EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD Fernandez in the outdoor NCAA?? US>UK. Is it Coach Franklin or Travel Agent Franklin?

I don't see how it is unfair. Those other kids should be in charge of their own lives and not play the blame game on a 25 year old who knows how to get what he wants.
i just dont understand how he can compete in england til he's 22 the age most US athletes graduate, then come to the US and begin an NCAA career. is there no type of rule or clock that starts or something?

HAHA!! this guys is slow and he's complaining.. you don't see a fast person crying around about this stuff, get a life and when you stop crying around about the situation others have and only worry about what you can do about your life, then you will live alot better and be less of a jealous loser runner nerd.
New rule starting next year will fix situations like this. For every year you compete after graduating high school, it counts as one year of college eligibilty. You get a 1 year window after graduating to do whatever you want but after that, the non-ncaa competitions count. This rule will help cut down on the older students competing at the NCAA level.
The rule will call for someone who runs a local 5k to lose a years worth of eligibilty for that race - if they are over 1 year out of high school.

Where can I find some info on this supposed new rule? I know DII has adopted something to that effect, but is there any documentation available about a similar change for DI? Please post a link if you have one.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. If Franklin is reading this I want him to know what a disgrace he is to UNM and to the state. Bringing foreign college grads into run as grad students who get a masters in "PE" or whatever lame bs degree is just plain awful. These guys are basically professional athletes. The "Brits" workout on their own schedule, etc. I don't care about Kirwa because the guy is honestly the hardest worker out there and is genuinely interested in his degree, but to have all these Brits taking up scholarships in one of the poorest states is just sad, especially when for the population size, New Mexico has deep talent. That is why Coach Henry was so great because he was all about recruiting New Mexicans and having a team that represented the state. I love UNM but hate this program, very unsatisfying.
Talk about a bunch of cry baby wusses. Wow! Franklin plays by the rules and everyone cries. Why doesn't anyone cry about the legalized cheating that BYU gets too utilize??? Mormon missions can be done after college, but yet they have athletes with wives and plenty of kids. Nobody cries about their 25 or 26 year olds competing. (Ok actually some smart people do). I am very proud of what UNM is doing. They are finally kicking people's butts like they should have been doing all along. They have a lot of local kids that are being developed. This does take time and its only year 3. Personally I like the Henry's a lot, but they were totally underperforming. And don't give me that bs that they didn't have enough scholarships. The Henry's NEVER used all the scholarships they had available. If you want to be good, you can NOT do it with only local talent. What a joke. GO LOBOS!!! Why don't you haters go crawl back in your holes!

If Emmanuel was in the Uk he would be working a full time job with no support. There is no professional system in the UK for athletes of Lee's standard - shoe contacts are just that - you get shoes and kit - no money. Thats why Uk athletes go out there after college - The NCAA system is to to UK the equivilent of being in a post colliegiate group to you! The Brits are within the rules (mainly) - the 4 years within the 5 year window still applies! I can to some extent see why it annoys Americans but really can you blame people like Lee for taking an opportunity that is open to him?
IF it is a problem then it is not the athletes fault its the system!
