BTW, Motorbreath I'm with BostonBound on this one. I only use gels in training when I'm doing a long run coupled with a long MP run (10 miles or greater). If it's an easy long run, or even a steady, moderate paced long run...no gels for me. Although I only take 2 during the marathon anyway...some folks take 4 or more.
I'm assuming this is your first marathon (you said the 22 was your longest run ever), so you should see if you can handle the gels while in MP stride. But I don't think you should need gels every long run, a couple of practice runs prior to race day will suffice.
Ding ding ding!
I agree with everything on here. I'll take gels (or even gatorade) only a couple of times during training, usually during a 20+ long run with 10+ at MP. Point is to get used to taking them in stride, and making sure my stomach can handle them at MP effort. For most long runs, though, the point is to teach your body to up the fat percentage, so I'll only take water.
By the way, 38 miles in six days. Can't get motivated to train for anything. So I'm just going to keep doing 6-7 miles most days of the week until I can.
