is that you Galen?
is that you Galen?
Apparently, Salazar must have left out one of the ingredients in his sauce.
Alberto ought to pick up his fellow Mexican vato.

Most everyone who posts on here has no idea what really happened. I am the meet director for the past weekends meet. Galen was indeed ill and when I spoke to him prior to the race I was surprised that he even got to the starting line. Galen was polite, well-mannered, and probably shouldn't have raced. But he did. Also, Coach Salazar was appreciative, and not anything like what people on this site say about him. Very cordial and polite. It probably would have been easy for Galen to just bag the race and not run, but I have a lot of respect for what he did. I know there are many people who do not like Galen for whatever reason they choose, but if you were in Albuquerque on Saturday I believe you would think differently.
Thanks.
Thanks for posting that. So the guy has a PR of just under 1:50, runs the altitude adjusted equivalent of 1:52 in his first rustbuster while sick, and everyone's piling on. Yep, I'm pretty worried about what this means for Rupp going forward...
altitude effects on the 800 are negligible, less than half a second.
He ran 1:54high, and the alititude adj is ~1/2 a second. Where are you getting 1:52?
Ok, first of all, I hate this site. I just posted a very elaborate response looking at the NCAA elevation adjustment and the VDOT calculator, which is iffy in its functioning right now, only to not save my work and have it sucked into the abyss. The conversion is definitely NOT less than half a second. Even the NCAA (which I believe is too conservative based on observation and other calculators) allows 0.66 seconds specifically for Albuquerque. And I know that if you throw in 1:52-1:53ish for sea level, it adjusts up to 1:54-1:55ish for altitude. But it obviously doesn't work in reverse.
All of the calculators spit out something different. A general rule of thumb for CO is roughly two seconds per lap or 0.97% for distances 3000 meters and above, but less for the mile and 800 obviously, and I've observed this many times from athletes that take the rare opportunity of going to sea level. Let's split the difference and call it a 1:53-point. I'm still not worried about the guy, especially if he was sick in his first "effort" of the season.

The other thing to consider is how long had Galen been up at elevation before he competed. That rather makes a huge difference. Does anyone know? It's not a perfect science to be sure.
He's been living in an altitude tent for 8 years now.
You're right.
Sweet Jesus, why do so many of you have no clue? Do you honestly think that this was treated as a "race" effort for Rupp? I bet the guy was/is still cranking out some heavy mileage and may, doubtful, taken the day before off. He's not a GD Miler. You've never had an off workout? That's all this was. Go back to your too many 400's on too much rest and worry about something more important. (Like graduating from high school, perhaps...)
I too was at the meet. Some notes:
1. About the meet organizers getting their "marquee guy"...Nobody knew Rupp was changing from the 3K to the 800 which were scheduled a couple hours apart--I spoke to high school kids who came early to register for an open meet that night and were coming back to see the 3k---when they came back...No Rupp. I was paying pretty close attention and never heard anything--I looked up and there was Rupp on the line and the announcer was saying he was "doing some speed work"
2. Rupp got walked down--did not respond to the pass...He couldn't, whether he was sick or did not have the legs or the altitude got to him, I don't know...My daughters reaction---"Dad, I thought that guy was supposed to be the best..."
3. Rupp puked immediatley after into a trash can...15 feet in front of my daughter's seat...Her reaction--"Gross"
4. Rupp was visibly hurting for a long time (puked a second time) and sat with his head in his hands in the stands for some time.
5. Salazar had to run to the concession stand and fork over 2 bucks for a bottle of water for Rupp after the race---you'd think they would have been prepared for that or asked meet management for some H20---I thought it was funny to see Salazar running (shuffling) off to buy water.
You're daughter will be scarred by your alleged parenthood . Assbreath.

It actually is. Would this ever have happened to Kennedy, Salazar, Ritz, Meb, TWill, Virgin, etc.? Not a chance. What is even the point of having Rupp race 800m at altitude right now? I'd expect something like this from Webb during his Raczko years.
Not a chance is right. Most of those guys couldn't break 1:55 if their life depended on it. Anyway, it is curious to see the celebration and the gleeful predictions of the end of Rupp's career. The 800m opener is faster than the 2009 one that kicked off his amazing indoor/outdoor seasons.

...except for the part where it is over three seconds slower this year than last:
4 240 Rupp, Galen Oregon 1:51.33

Rupp's and Webb's situations are in no way comparable. Rupp is a long distance guy and Webb is a miler. Rupp has a pb of 1:50 and Webb's is 1:43 something. Rupp's career has been on a steady upward trajectory since the beginning while Webb's has been wildly inconsistent.
Webb probably had the talent at one point to run 1:55 with almost no training. Sure maybe this is just a rust buster, but it's an Olympic year and the competition to make the American team will be fierce. He has a long way to go.
Just to point out that Nanostim is a banned substance!!
