If men wanted to set records, they might consider wearing bun huggers/speedos alone, but the negative psychological impact from crowd laughing at them would likely outweigh any actual air resistance benefits.
I agree completely. I need to wear long spandex shorts or tights to keep my junk from coming unfurled at an inopportune moment of the race!
I remember a guy at the Raleigh Relays in like 99 or 00 that ran the 10k in a speed suit. He may have won it, if I recall correctly.

That's a wet suit you retard. You take it off after the swim...
Cal State San Marcos had speed suits for the 2003 Cross Country Season, so they were required to race 8k in them. Steve Scott loved it, more as a joke for the guys on the team to draw attention to the program, as it was a new program at the time! Boom!

Worked a water station at 1999 Chicago Marathon, the year Kannouchi(?) broke the world record for the first time. Saw probably a top 25 female runner in speed suit.
Small world. I worked a water station that year and remember a top woman in a speed suit. By the time she passed me at 24.5 miles, she had shit her pants and didn't stop.

That's a pretty good argument against earing a speed suit for a marathon!

they look ridiculous, just wear shorts + vest
What's a "vest"?
So I'm doing a marathon for fun in Nov (easy effort just ticking off another sub 3 for a weekend with my buddys away) and I'm tempted to get a speedsuit for this to see/for the camp of it.
Please convince me this is a terrible idea. But I need legit reasons, not just "it is uncool".
Morphsuit
You better do it before Jakob does.
reed ran the 2021 NCAA xc 10K in a speedsuit?
Speed skaters don't count?
It's not a terrible idea. It's a great idea. Speed suits are the aerodynamically superior choice and they look way cooler/funnier.
Remember that time the "Norwegian Fat Man" won the Olympic Triathlon? Wouldn't have been as funny if he wasn't in a speed suit.
I'm pretty sure this is the one. Good job it's something abroad so nobody I know will see me.
l?gatewayAdapt=Pc2MsiteI think this is the one haha. Lucky the race is in a different country so people I know won't see me. Can't be more embarrassing than the time I ran a 5k in a tinman elite vest.
If you're counting non-onesies, Kilian was wearing short tights and tight tops in 2010 at UTMB (166km/~20 hours), as well as the shorter Western States 100 miler (~16 hours).
Just an update. I did the 'thon two weeks back, I didn't wear a speedsuit. I regret my decision.
800 - uncommon but prob will see someone do it every few meets
1500/mile - very uncommon, this is like you'll come across one runner wearing one every few seasons
3k/5k - exceedingly rare. Probably would make letsrun news.
10k - never
Jakob Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen would like to have a talk with you
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
