Yes, we won the state meet easily - twice.
I don't know if someone said this already, I won't read through the whole thread. But what the heck is a 9:04 2 miler doing losing to a 4:07, 4:09, and 4:12 in XC?? I know the 4:07/4:09 conversions are faster than a 9:04 two mile, but I would expect the 2 miler to be better in XC in high school. Also, what were those guys' 2 mile PRs? -

which school did you run in "a little background." I coach at the HS level and those times are sick. I think we would know your team. let us know!

Most of the top runners on my two years of Highschool XC went to the same NAIA school.
-
We were better in track than cross country. The times are verifiable.
I never really bought into all of the high school hype - again - it was a very well off town, mostly Jewish in ethnic make-up (especially now) that took academics and career type stuff seriously. All of us lead quiet professional lives (some are incredibly successful) and it was a great small town suburban experience.
The most gratifying feedback came from Joe Newton, having beat his teams twice (a rare event back then). His gracious words were the highest form of praise any of us received. -

So were those times -- 4:07 etc. -- what they ran in college? Because if those were high school times, I'd be seriously impressed and curious what school you went to...
Meanwhile, to participate in this exercise: I was on a Texas state high school championship x-country team and our top guy went to Oregon on a ride, I went to Stanford, and our third man went to the University of Texas at Austin. We all did fairly well. I don't think any of the rest of our teammates ran in college.
It's interesting that good college runners very seldom arrive from a program that doesn't bring other people along, too.
Does anyone know of a top h.s. runner who came from a h.s. program that was otherwise poor? I can think of a couple of people, but not many...
andre williams. armstrong hs had more shootings than d1 athletes by far -

yes they are verifiable, but the times you listed for the top three milers are not correct (unless they are relay splits).

1987 Cross Country Team:
No. 1-Rice University
No. 2-Southeastern Louisiana
No. 3-Southeastern Louisiana
No. 4-Houston Baptist University
No. 5-No
No. 6-Univerity of Texas-Tennis Scholarship(number 1 player)
No. 7-Lousiana State University-Golf Scholarship
Ranked number 2 in state all year behind Conroe McCullough (with a couple of wins over Humble Kingwood) until Regionals, where I ran like crap(34th) and didn't qualify for state. Still hurts 20 some odd years later. Tennis and Golfer would run around 17:00 5k consistently. Not bad especially for the goler since some people say golfers are not athletes, lol.
So, that would be 57.12% ran D1 and 85.68% competed in some type of D1 sport. Not bad considering we only had ten guys. -
Team was 15th Place at MN State Meet in 2002 listed are approximate 5k PRs and that year and their year in school
1. Sr 16:20 -- No running in college
2. Sr 16:20 --Went to D3 college his mother taught at quit after his coach told him to "run 5 miles at 5k pace" for practice
3. Sr 16:40 -- No running in college and may not have finished high school
4. Jr 17:00 -- No running in college
5. Sr(me) 17:23 -- Ran D3 (poorly ~15:40 5k), this was my first year of high school cross country
6. Jr 17:24 -- No running in college
7. Sr 18:30 -- No running in college
If you couldn't guess we did a lot of mile repeats with full rest, 400m repeats with full rest and never ran longer than 8 miles (averaged probably 4-5 miles a day with every Sunday off). -

Agree with the above poster that "a little background" looks like the '77 Deerfield, IL team. Rated #1 in the country I believe with their top 5 under 15:00 at state.
If memory serves, Todd McAllister (4:07), Mark McAllister (4:09), Tom Stevens (4:09), Keith Hampton (9:04) -
deerfield:
tom mccallister 407.1 conversion (348.8 1500m) 1978
mark mccallister 409.0 mile 1978
tom stevens 4.10.0 mile conversion (4:08.6 1600m) 1979
pretty sick.
