Hi,
I've been running for about 3.5 years. For the last year and a half, my running has been stifled by a nagging hip injury. It all started during my freshman year in college, right after the indoor track season. About two days after the indoor national meet, I set out on a 14 mile run. About 9 miles into the run, I felt a sharp tightening pain that originated in my left quad and then sliced up into my left hip flexor area. It was painful enough that I had to stop my run and sort of limp home. Anyways, I tried running 4 miles the next day, and I found that I could only get to 3 before the pain struck. I decided that I might need to take a few days off or something. That was when I discoverd the popping noise deep inside my hip area. There was a loud pop whenever I would turn my foot 90 degrees out and raise my knee along that same angle. Also, doing certain ab excercises like leg lifts and such would irritate my hip to no end.
The short story is that I didn't run outdoor track. I visited 3 orthopedic surgeons (one a sports medicine doctor) and they told me that it could be burseitus or maybe scar tissue. Both gave me treatments but they did not seem to show results. I have not run over 1 hour since that 9 miler. My hip still feels as if it will lock up or do something funny if I run more than 40 miles a week. I have been able to run cross and track this past season (of which I am very thankful), but I know that my mileage is holding me back. My hip sometimes pops very loudly and it feels so strange. I want to get back up to 70 miles, but I think that my hip might go haywire if I do. Has anyone ever had anything like this?? If so what did you do to treat it?? I would be very thankful if someone would give me some insight on how I should proceed.
