The only way to get even with this guy is to fire up your snow blower even earlier, say about 4:30AM. If you dont have a snow blower then you will have to wait until the Spring when you can fire up your lawn mower in the middle of the night. Somehow the score must be settled.
Is it rude of my neighbor to fire up his snowblower at 5:45 am?

Take from it what you want and make all the assumptions you care to. AGAIN:
He blows snow at 11:30 PM on a Friday and is compulsive.
Both vehicles they own are 4WD.
Of the 15-20 other houses on the side street across from us and on either side of us NO ONE else was running a blower that early.
The blower is less than 20' from my house when he is doing the turnaround.
I get along great with my neighbor and this was a mild, short lived irritation at best.
ALSO:
There was 3+ inches of snow on the ground.
This is a nice suburban area and we don't have ambulances and police cars screaming up and down the street all night.
Both our homes sit back 300' from the road on nearly 3 acres so the plows are not that loud.
Many of you are much more worked up over this than me.
He is running the blower now and there is about 2" on the ground.
He will run the blower when there is 1"+ on the ground early on a Saturday morning. I don't and by mid-day the sun has melted it off the asphalt.
LASTLY:
All of you little dinks with your keyboard muscles calling me a pussy will one day actually own a home and hopefully figure out that some things are worth discussing with neighbors and others are not. I simply posed a question shortly after experiencing a minor inconvenience.
I own both a blower and a shovel. I shovel early and late and only do what I have to in order to get in an out so that I don't disturb my neighbors. What part of the other 20 or more neighbors in earshot are not running their blowers at 5:45am and 11:30PM can you not comprehend? -
Wow, little did you know you would need to almost write a PhD dissertation on your neighbor's snow-blowing. This thread to me really typifies all that is good and bad with the Internet. You get a few useful responses, some jokes (with varying degrees of humor), and a bunch of unhelpful responses. The holier than thous are really the most annoying.
The fact that this person is using their snow-blower at 5:45am and 11:30pm on a Friday indicates to me that he is probably A) being a dick or B) just clueless as to what he is doing. My guess is it is B, in which case I still think he is being a dick as a person should have some awareness of others in their actions. (i know, what a crazy thought).
This is actually a bit of a tricky situation, particularly given that you get along with him. I would try saying something along the lines of "hey John Doe. i don't want to be a pain, but do you think you might be able to hold off on snow-blowing so early in the morning. with our houses being pretty close, it is waking everyone up so i am getting some extra crankiness from the kids". -

As messed up as the roads were he was going to be late anyway. He and his wife both have 4WD. Funny thing is that when I let the dog out at 6:30 no one else was running a snow blower.
At the rate it was coming down it would not have mattered. I do like these neighbors a lot, we do spend time together but I guess a little history is needed here:
He has been known to fire up the snow blower at 11:30 pm on a Friday....
He was going to be late for work if he cleared his drive at 5:45 and has a 4WD? If he leaves at 6:30 normally then I guess you just have to accept that he had to plow at that time.
You seem to be implying that he should have waited until 7:30 (when your kids get up). Your comment doesn't make sense. -
not if he had to go to work and needed to clear the drive way. Hundred of people die each year from trying to shovel their drive way by hand.

...me thinks 'Caveman' is correct on this issue. As an old college prof used to say: "Don't get mad, get even!"
Find where the guy lives and either keep him awake late at night or do like he did, lol!!! -
Not rude.
"The blower is less than 20' from my house when he is doing the turnaround." -- that is not that close, is it?
It is irrelevant whether other neighbors are snowblowing at 6:30.
It is also irrelevant whether your neighbors drive 4WD Jeeps or they drive SmartCars. The guy has his own reasons. Maybe he just likes a clear driveway. Maybe he had a bad experience with snow. Who cares.
Have you asked him to try not to use the snowblower so early? If not, then it is rude of you to be griping on a running message board when what you ought to be doing is talking to your buddy next door. If you guys are close this should be nipped in the bud before going internat on his ass.
Living in a neighborhood means living with neighbors. Other people don't always do what you want and sometimes they do stuff that is downright stupid, but that is their choice to make. It's a free country still. Let snow blow all he wants. Maybe you can get him to do your driveway while he is at it. -
Why ask when you've already come to your own conclusion? You're just wasting everyone's time.

It's called human nature. -
alright, great talk, see ya out there.

Do kids not shovel people's sidewalks and driveways for money anymore? When I was a kid not so long ago, this was a regular thing. Every time it snowed kids with shovels would be out trying to make a few bucks. It seems that the easiest thing for the guy who has to leave early for work would be to hand over the $15 to some kid to take care of the sidewalk before school.

how is this thread still going
-
It's still going because no one has asked the question that gets to the heart of the issue: Was he getting ready to go on a run?
I mean, seriously, it's a funny topic, but it's not LetsFigureOutIfThisIsRude.com -

How does this not make sense? Seems to me if the roads are less than ideal and other people are driving slow a tank won't get you to work any faster.
Perhaps the OP was suggesting that early morning snow blowing would not have made a difference so neighbor could have waited til the end of the work day?
I would guess you are still a student. -
R U serious...a guy complaining about his neighbor running the snow blower. I understand wanting the kids to sleep but come on man. The is no justification to this one - you just have a complaint - move on!

Based on this, I'd say you're neighbor is inconsiderate, but not rude unless his intent is to bother you.
Try to lead by example. One morning before he's out, say around 5:38 AM, warm your car like your getting ready to leave, and shovel only the sidewalk and a path for your car. If he comes outside and greets you, speak only in a whisper.
If he's this anal about snow, what's he like about leaves in autumn? -

Wow, nice planning there. -

He does not have many large trees but when the white pines start dropping needles in the late fall he chops them up with the riding mower 2-3 times a week. Even when there is no grass growing, Bolete mushrooms pop up under the pines in the fall and he runs them over with the tractor and chops them up because they are not grass.
And when his late dropping ornamental pear trees start losing leaves very late in the fall he makes concentric circles around them daily to mulch the leaves down into the grass.
And as to the poster on planning, both our lots are 150x800. I did not build the house, I am second owner. Our houses are 3400 to 3800 square feet with wide driveways and wider turnarounds. There is only so much room at 150 feet wide.
(Would any of you like to have me as a neighbor? Yes my wife is hot, no I won't post pictures)
