.....Try explaining to a person obsessed by college football and basketball what running a 10k in 26 and change even
All I would do is ask them to remember the last time they had to run a timed mile, because all athletes are forced to run a mile at some point. Then I would say imagine running 6 of them back to back in 4 min and 13 seconds each and still have to run an extra lap at that pace. Any athlete can appreciate what it takes to have that type of talent. Only a retard who sits home and plays Madden all day and has no concept of actual sports would be confused.
SI's goal is to sell magazines, so their focus is on the spectator sports. Even Nascar is more important to SI than distance running. Bolt brought T&F back into the spotlight, so he's worth something to SI. Bekele, despite his greatness, doesn't have the star power and marketability of Bolt, so he isn't worth crap to SI. As distance runners, we shouldn't really care because we are only dorks paying attention to this sport.

Cael Sanderson went undefeated in the NCAA and won the olympics in wrestling. I'm sure there is a wrestling board somewhere that is up in arms.
This. Cael Sanderson is probably the greatest American wrestler ever. Yeah, Bekele is probably GOAT, but just be thankful Bolt is bringing recognition to the sport. Cael couldn't really even do that for wrestling.
Sports Illustrated is poorly named. They do not cover "sports". They cover Football, Baseball, and Basketball. Pretty much like ESPN. Neither entity is about sports.
When they need "filler", they pay go to boxing, hockey or golf. When they need more filler, they pay attention to other things, like running
Every year they publish a year-in-review issue with images of every cover throughout the year. I counted one year and found something like 3 covers that didn't cover the sports I've mentioned above.
Actually, they cover hockey to a far greater extent than is warranted by hockey's meager popularity.
