if you run a PR time in a time trial on a certified track at a certified distance, with another witness keeping time, does it count as a legit PR?
or does it have to be in a race?

Legit, as long as you didn't mix up 1500 vs the mile. Ha, ha!
Legit, as long as you didn't mix up 1500 vs the mile. Ha, ha!
Not valid unless you got a T-shirt and finisher's medal. Was the timekeeper's stopwatch certified?
Seriously, I'd count it.
If it wasn't a race, it is not a legit PR, but it is a still a PR. The main reason for this is that you train to race, not to time trial in practice by yourself or with teammates. Don't put the PR in PRactice.
I ran my 800m PR in a time trial. It's not an official PR, but I can still say that I'm capable of running a 1:51 800m.
As long as its 400m and above. The sprints need electronic timeing to count.
I would say 1500 and up, unless you smash your 800 PR then just add a few tenths to be safe. 400 and lower is off limits for practice PRs.
A) Yes. It your own "personal" record - who else cares where it was.
B) Given the criteria stated, it's a more valid PR than say a 5k at a local-yokel un-certified 5k.
C) Now that you know what you can do, just go find a race and beat it then it really doesn't matter.
