Why is this thread still active and why does anyone really care? GSU hasn't really produced any serious mid-distance or distance athletes - it is a third-tier Div 1 program that has had a coaching change....big deal.

You obviously do not follow college CC and T&F. They are alot better than a 3rd tier Div I program. Get a life or get on another thread. (You do know that there are football threads on other websites)
Who will be my new coach?
How does a person's degree status affect his coaching ability? If you're not using a computer made by a college dropout (Michael Dell), then at least you're likely using an operating system developed by a college dropout (Bill Gates). Gates and Dell are absolute titans of industry without a college pigskin on their walls.
Now the guy taking over the reigns at GSU may be an idiot or not, I don't know. However, his graduation status has little or no bearing on that.
BTW - I have two undergraduate degrees and one masters and I just hate being defined by that fact alone.
So who (what "idiot") is taking over "the reigns" ?
When one of the primary roles of a coach is to graduate students they should probably have graduated themselves. Not the same as Dell / Gates.

Degrees are required for jobs like these. Being a Head coach requires more than just conjuring up workouts and holding a stopwatch. Other duties include: managing multiple budgets: travel, equipment, scholarships, etc. Usually, someone without a college degree, or even graduate degree, does not provide the know-how to do these.
Their website says that GSU won't start football until 2010. Just not sure why this is a big deal. If you could name a single big time distance runner from Georgia State, you wouldn't need the "you must be a football guy" comeback.
A new Head XC coach can turn things around.
WHO IS INTERVIEWING?
It is a shame that Division I track and field in Georgia is as bad as it is. This is a state loaded....and I mean loaded...with talent every year. UGA won't recruit in state kids (Wynne and Taylor to UF), Tech lost 1/2 their scholarships, State is in peril, Kennesaw State is losing their head coach and looks to be in peril, Southern has only a stagnant women's program......If one Athletic Director in the state would wake up and realize how good a solidly funded track and field program at one of these schools could be, it would be scary for everyone else. I hear Norton may be in hot water at UGA. They should be much much better than what they are. State is just in a bad area and with no track facility, it's hard to pull kids in. Tech, unfortunately, is a technical school and not everyone wants to go there. KSU, well it looked like someone had the right idea there and things were looking up, but head coach is resigning, no track facility (allegedly one coming this year according to sources) and football talk going on. Which we know what that means for men's track usually. Southern, is just Southern. It is a shame that the high school coaches in the state don't speak up and encourage SOMEBODY to step up and keep a solid program around. The state itself deserves a quality program for these kids to attend.
Where is KSU coaching? Why resignation?

FYI, a pigskin = a football; a diploma = a sheepskin.
I know Coach McGarey is a Doctor of Biology as well. He was just a part time head coach officially. I was told he wanted to move to full time coach and get away from teaching but the athletics department said no. Most people don't know they have no full time coach on staff. IDK maybe they are trying to keep it that way and save money for a horrible football team.

You have to go way back to 2008 when Mark Steed was 12th in D1 XC.
I agree. GA State could be very competitive if the elite GA kids would give them a look. UGA needs a change. They should be contending for a championship. Kennessaw will be alright. I don't know about a big time program but surely a top 2nd tier.
