I'm not an elite like some of the posters here (2:55 after a couple years of running), but articles like the one I've linked to on this weekend's Marine Corps Marathon bum me out. Here's the last paragraph:
"The people who have impressed me the most are not the people who have been running two-hour marathons for 20 years," said Cheryl Peace, a 42-year-old computer scientist from Laurel who will compete in her second marathon Sunday. "The people who impress me are the 40-year-old mother of three who ran her first marathon. These are the people who inspire me more. I wasn't sure if I could do it. I wasn't sure if it was possible."
I think she's entitled to be "inspired" by whomever she chooses; however, to note what motivates her at the expense of folks at the top seems a little silly. Of course, I'm sure the writer directed the question in such a way so as to get that response.
