Larry did race hard and go for the lead, but he had a trickster side. After the 1968 Boston Marathon that Amby Burfoot won, we stood watching the later finishers. I had my gym bag in hand with my trophy that was too big sticking out. I had won it earlier in the morning in the Lexington 5 miler. I had a little mustache so Larry decided to introduce me to the crowd of people as Alfredo Penaloza, the Mexican guy who finished third. Larry held my arm before a gathering bunch of people and continued weaving his embarrassing fiction about how "I" trained in the mountains of Mexico. When people started speaking Spanish to me I had to rip myself loose and slip away. Larry had no mercy as he delighted in how he trapped me.
