Unfortunately, you're jumping the gun, pops. Junior should not see the inside of jogger until he is at least 1yo. He can't sit up or do much else for a while. Too dangerous to strap him into a jogger. Trust me, I feel your pain.
If you have a baby kid you should not be on LetsRun, you should be at Diii baby nats. HAHA LALA
Bob Ironman is my daughter's ride... Highly recommend it.
You are not jumping the gun. As soon as your kid can hold their own head up (around four months), they are good to go. The only real safety issue is you need to make sure their head is laterally stable. You can snuggle a rolled up towel around their head and shoulders, or there are inserts you can purchase which do the same thing. It's no different than a car seat...just get them snuggled in so they are not moving around, and they'll be fine. You obviously want to stick to routes that smooth and flat so that junior is not bouncing around, but otherwise get out and have a good run with your kid.
I have two kids, both of whom were in the stroller or tandem stroller at four and three months respectively. My first and only recommendation would be Baby Jogger brand, with the 20inch wheels. Smooth as hell, easy to push, high quality construction, and they hold their value well when it comes time to sell. Have fun.
Ask Zac Freudenburg, the new world record holder in pushing a stroller marathon.
I'll second the Baby Jogger recommendation. My husband and I are both tall and leggy, and the larger wheel size option didn't hamper our stride.
Used it for years on the beaches at the Oregon Coast and it performed well in the sand.
Will also echo the car seat insert for head stabilization as well as waiting for adequate neck strength to develop.
Congratulations!
I have two small children and started running with them around 1 month old. They were big strong babies,I had an insert that really held them in place, reclined the seat fully, and ran on really smooth just paved bike paths for the first couple of months. The BOB worked out really well for me.
Thank you all so much for the great advice!
Your kid's brain is still physically forming in the first year. I would not risk my kid's brain banging against the side of his skull too often.
For that reason, it is suggested that one wait 6 months to a year before taking your kid out.
If you do in the early stages, I would use paved trails, avoid sudden bumps and try to use a sling type enclosure.
Bob stroller is the best. I like the revolution.
I had the BOB SUV with the car seat adapter, which you can use to run with baby from a rather early age. You can't really go wrong with any of the BOB's, although I prefer the fixed wheel on the Ironman and SUV to the Revolution.
We have a jogging stroller....haven't jogged with the daughter very much...walked a lot with her though. You're gunho right now....just wait. You won't want to rock the baby even the slightest once he/she arrives. Taking the jogging stroller into the street? hahahahahahaha!
Now sprint training with the jogging stroller...baby will LOVE that. Baby loves to go fast for like 5-10 seconds. Also, if you plan on going on longer runs with the jogging stroller (long in baby world meaning more than 10 minutes) make sure to bring at least one diaper, wipe, and milk and TOYS! At the end of the day you begin to realize that a jogging stroller has nothing to do with jogging...:)
Also, what happens if you're on a run with the baby and he/she begins to go ape shit? Being a mile or more away from home running with a jogging stroller with a crying baby is not what I call a good time. I don't think the people who actually made jogging strollers have children. I'd suggest using it at a local park that has a repeatable loop that way you have an out if the baby decides she's done. Oh yeah, you don't get to decide how far you get to run.
My suggestion: See if you have a FreeCycle Group in your town or find a baby consignment store. No reason paying $100-200 for a jogging stroller you may not ever actually use for jogging...especially if you have BOTH a regular and jogging stroller. My suggestion...you can use a jogging stroller for a regular stroller and I think it's much more comfortable for both you and baby (rides better).
Alan...father of the coolest 1 yr old girl ever.
I've really liked the Bob Ironman- folds easily, very durable (ran with 1st kid from about 6 months to 4.5 years-- getting heavy now...). No problems at all. From 1-3 he loved it. Likes getting out, seeing things, I would often go 9-12 with him. Now is less likely to go along, but did ask to come with for my 6 am run the other day. Depending on your climate, they also have a fairly well fitting rain/wind screen- with that on and plenty of blankets he still asked to go when it was 10-15 degrees out.
As far as the head shaking- a smooth path and taking it easy on the turns, combined with a blanket padding him, will be plenty. They barely move on any reasonably paved path. Just use common sense, and don't go bouncing over curbs, rutted trails, etc.
I have owned both the BOB IronMan and the BOB SUV. I cannot endorse the SUV highly enough. The IronMan was great, but the SUV is hands down better.
SUV can be taken anywhere you wish to run, and holds up so well.
Please do not run with your kid for at least a year (or 6 months if you are just planning to run on flat roads), but once you are ready, the SUV is the way to go.
Visit a local bike shop and test them both out. SUV needs little-to-no maintenance compared to the IronMan, and retains trueness much longer.
I also take the SUV on trails all the time, which is fun for my daughter.
BOB puts the other brands to shame, I have tried many.
I log at least 60 miles a week with my BOB SUV, and I have had it for 2 years.
Not to call Alan a bad daddy, but avoid the car seat adapters, the kids should not be running with you at that age. Those are good for stroller in the grocery store, not running.
Do NOT skimp on your jogger. It is actually worth the good money.
Have fun, good luck and be safe.
P.S. The BOB Revolution is great for around town stuff, but not good for running. Wheels are too small and the stroller is too low to the ground.
Sorry, not Alan, I meant Momof2
