I really don't understand how anyone who knows anything about the sport can put the slightest stock in some of Lindgren's claims. I think the hostility on this thread is mainly emanating from the younger crowd who want some sort of confession from Lindgren's peers that "Yes, he definitely made up those stories and is either outright lying or crazy." Looking at the video about the marathon, it's pretty clear to me Lindgren does believe what he's saying, and honestly I do think he's not quite sane. Because the stars were not as under the limelight with technology as they are today (Flotrack interviews, etc.) many of Lindgren's fans at the time didn't have the opportunity to hear him speak much, and in general knowledge about human limits wasn't quite as developed then so how were they to know what he was saying was crazy-talk? But instead of addressing the question, these older guys are saying "Gerry was a huge inspiration, etc." Just because someone inspires you in some positive way doesn't mean we should look up to them in others (e.g. Tiger Woods), I think it's just hard for these older guys to accept that their childhood hero is really cuckoo.
