Is Betterbed consistent? If he can stay healthy. He got 12th at the West regional last year and 52nd at nationals running on a stress fracture and not training the last month. Not sure what was going on with him earlier this season.

Addressing earlier in the season - go to Flotrack and listen to his NCAA West Regional interview - that sheds a little light.
I appreciate the intelligent and honest response, they are hard to find at LetsRun. I'm intrigued about Betterbed because I had heard very little about him before last week. For him to beat guys like Bethke and Pudeska is impressive. I wish him a great race at Terra Haute, and I'm not against Portland doing well, just miffed by the chest thumping and childish comments made about one race in their XC rivalry with Oregon. I suppose when you haven't been there, this is how some people react.
Are you high or just blind? I promise you that no one on here "chest thumping" runs for the University of Portland. To be honest, i have read through this whole thread (because i find your ignorance amusing)and i haven't seen anyone "chest thumping" or making "childish comments" in regards to their victory. I think you are just making this up because of how bitter you are about the loss. The only childish/ clueless one here is you. UO doesn't need your help defending their underachievement, mostly because your "help" is only hurting and making yourself and all Duck fans look like a bunch of ignorant, bitter douchers. I'm sure you will resond to this post very promptly considering you have spent the last few days glued to this thread, get a life.

Touchy, touchy, touche. I can't wait for the Terra Haute results. UP will show that they aren't ready for prime time. Good job though in a race that didn't mean much.

That would be "Terre Haute" my fine feathered friend.
People are spring-loaded at any comment you make because you can't make a straight compliment to the UP team. It's always laced with stuff like your sentence above:
"Good job though in a race that didn't mean much."
Well, I'd say the NCAA West Regional did mean quite a bit - top two spots get automatics...you control your own destiny that way.
The biggest issue that UP will have is their youth. In my estimation, they could finish anywhere from 2nd to 10th....not bad in anyone's form chart - but variable because for many of these guys, it's the first time at the national meet. Which is also why the could finish very high, or down the list a bit.
Kipchumba's 2nd national meet - and he's got a broken hand - finished 18th last year
Osoro's 1st national meet
Dunbar's 1st national meet
Betterbed's 2nd national meet - finished 52nd last year
Frerker's 2nd national meet - finished 130th last year
Cosby's 1st national meet
Geiger's 1st national meet
If Malde or Bassett run, it'd be their first national meet.
So there you have it...only 3/7 have national meet experience - and then only last year. Top 7 has 3 frosh, 2 sophs, 1 junior, and 1 senior - so the good news is that they stand to improve year to year...
I'm expecting Alf to be in the top 10 - Osoro & Dunbar in the top 30 - Betterbed could be a darkhorse top 10 candidate. Then, Frerker/Cosby/Geiger - they could finish in any order and could determine where the Pilots end up in the final standings.
Everyone on here is a very brutal human being! No mercy in any of you! Geez. :)
These may be guys who are inexperienced at the NCAA meet, but that means nothing. Several of the foreigners are probably 25 years old, much more mature than most American kids running in college.
I repeat my contention that the West Regionals didn't mean much. C'mon, let's be serious, everyone knew that the West was going to get 6-7 entries and Stanford, Portland and Oregon were three of them, unless they didn't run the race. You "control" no destiny by finishing top 2 in this situation. All you do is join the other 5 teams who will travel to Terre Haute. Ask Oklahoma State how much "destiny they controlled" last year after winning their regional championship.
I see that you are already making up excuses for a poor race by the Pilots on Monday. I just hope the Rob Conner doesn't have his team thinking like you are.

On a more serious note....who is this Betterbed guy? Where did he come from...seriously good runner and my kudos to Coach Conner.
He was a stud in HS in WA and like a lot of Conners' eventual top dogs, took a few years to come around. Now like Kinsella, Moore, and Kilburg, he's rolling people up.
The olodest kid on UP is 23. You are an idiot and nobody likes you.

Teddy my friend - now who's being childish...you are.
There are NO 25 year olds on UPs team. I will be you right now that there are more TEENAGERS on the entire team than anyone older than 20.
Second paragraph - you control your destiny by getting an automatic bid. Period. By not getting an automatic bid, you are leaving yourself open to not being selected. I'll agree, not very likely, but still - the statement is fact.
Nope, not making excuses. Pointing out facts as I see them from my perspective as a Duck AND Pilot fan. And knowing Conner, he's got his team prepared - and that he's going to give them their motivation. Not sure about Vin's motivational tactics, but from what I've heard (while I was there), he wasn't none too happy about the Ducks finishing 3rd.
My dream finish is 5 Ducks & 5 Pilots in the top 40....maybe a couple of Huskies thrown in for good measure - just to emphasize how good the Pacific NW is.

Though I've heard rumor that puskedra was not 100% at regionals I have no idea if that is true or not. What I do know is he was 5th at NCAA's last year and ran a 28:30 10K in a low key race with Rupp helping him in the early track season. I'd imagine he could have done faster than that in a cardinal or stanford invite type race. I won't be surprised if he finishes top 5 again this year, but it will be a tough task with Chelanga, Derrick, Fernandez, McNeil and even Vail who was in the 30's at World Senior Cross last winter. Really legit top runners this year. A very legit title to win.
But Puskedra should be back in single digits and the ducks are easily capable of a top five finish if guys return to form and McNamara and Centro have races that they are capable of.
Puskedra is a top 10 guy, McNamara (assuming he was just rested at regionals) and Centro are both top 20 guys and both Mercados and Klotz are top 40 guys. That's 6 guys who can finish in the top 40. Oregon under Vin have a pretty good history of making this race the one that matters most so I doubt they'll fall too far short of their potential.
While Stanford and Ok. State look great recently and look great on paper, I don't know that their depth is any better in the big show. Their #2,3 &4 runners could slip substantially in terms of points picked up at NCAAs verses regionals and NCAA's, but Oregons 4-6 guys could actually place around the same spots or higher at NCAA's vs Regionals.
If all the top teams run close to potential I see the ducks getting up to 3rd, if stanford or ok. state both have an Oregon (at regionals) day at NCAA's and the ducks show up, they could take it home again. A lot of unknowns for the ducks like what is Centro's fitness/health/confidence level now? What can a healthy McNamara do over 10K under this pressure? Will Luke be able to pull it together even if he can't keep up with Derrick or Fernandez?
Who knows. Should be interesting.
who cares?
