Whoa in his blog he actually says running was becoming a selfish pursuit and he regretted taking it so far as to suck the life out of him. Very few runners are willing to say this and/or retire at his age with his ability. I respect this guy tremndously he actually is a distance runner with a vision of what he wants out of life in the future outside of running. What a rarity. If I was in his position I would not have the balls the quit.
Of course running is a selfish pursuit... He's not retiring cause he's sick of being selfish, he's quitting because he's had 3 shitty ass years (for him) and doesn't know how to get good again.
I also don't think AirBnB is his "vision of what he wants out of life in the future." He didn't conceive of the idea, or start the company. He came across an opportunity, saw a way out of running which would seem noble somehow, as opposed to giving up on the sport.
Lastly, like someone said on the other thread, what's wrong with working and training? Bay area is great for training. Director of marketing at an internet startup probably has some pretty flexible hours. Back in the 80s, Jonesy would perform manual labor all day with the RAF and take his year's vacation for the month prior to a big marathon to train at altitude. Those guys knew how to not bitch, but just get it done, all while having a career.
