Yes Gay DID win, so he was NOT pulled along. His 9.69 was in the Shanghai Golden Grande Prix where where he beat Asafa Powell who ran a 9.85.
Gay also had probably one of the worst starts of the year in this race, so who knows what could have been run.
I thought he ran his AR at the world championships??? didn't he run 9.6x there for silver?

Please, making the finals very nice on her part. Medalling? Everyone was falling down, being DQ'd. Might as well have made her the winner of the Lakefront Marathon too.
Your obvious envy over Rowbury's medal is really old and boring. Get over it. Rowbury got a medal. No matter what you say, you won't change things.
Let your envy go. It's not becoming!

He ran 9.71 for silver, which might've still been an American record.
The technical superiority of Gay's performance doesn't negate the fact that Ritz's 12:56 (and subsequent HM bronze) was the most surprising American performance in years.
Gay
Jeter
Phillips
Richards
Gay ran the 9.69 with a + 2.0 m/s tailwind.
I'd say the USA performances of the year would be having 4 women break the 4:00 barrier in the 1500m, when you consider how in the past, only 3 people had done it before legally.
Actually only 3 US women broke 4:00 in the 1500m.
Rowbury did not go sub four.
Willard, CWT, and Barringer did.
Rowbury is certainly next in line to do it.
I am going to out on a limb and nominate Jason Hartmann for his 2:12 win at Medtronic. I don't think people have really grasped the significance of his performance. Jason beat out a decent group of Kenyans by just over a minute. He put them away solidly in the final miles. This, I believe, is the beginning of the end of the myth that the East Africans want it more or have more guts than Americans. Ritz, Teg and Hall have shown that US distance runners are not that far behind the East Africans in terms of time. Hartmann may have made the crucial breakthrough that US runners can race the East Africans and win. Of course, the East Africans will, for the foreseeable future, dominate the marathon and other distance events. But top US runners, though fewer in number, may start winning big races and get over the idea that we can't beat East African runners.
while I agree, this isn't USA surprising performance....Gotta go with someone else.

Gay set the US Record at the WC, then broke it later in China.
Gay's performance is the second fastest 100m ever run, AND an American record. He is clearly the second best sprinter in the world--maybe ever.
Ritz' performance is the fifth fastest this year AND an America Record. Ritz' time is obviously not even in the top 10 all-time, and is roughly 19 seconds slower than the world Record. 19 seconds!! It's still impressive, but not remotely comparable to Gay's performance nor Gay's position vs. world competition. Ritz currently owns the American Record for 5,000, but would actually have a pretty hard time placing in the top three at US champs to qualify for international competition at that distance.
why not one of obama's jogs to the bathroom in the middle of the night? seems only fitting after his nobel and cy young awards.

It's very telling that your hatred of Obama runs so deep that you feel the need to interject his name into any discussion, regardless of how unrelated it may be. Obsessed much?

Trey Hardee came up big with a gold in Bryan Clay's absence. And to be honest, Clay would have had his hands full trying to beat Hardee. Through 9 events, Hardee would have probably been in the lead. Hardee is still pretty young as far as decathletes go and could have a go at the AR or possibly the WR. Being solid through 10 events in a major championship is not an easy feat and seldom happens to even the great ones. Dan O'Brien missed two Oly's because of trials mishaps.

I agree.
The ONLY performance that had me pumping my fist in the air at 5:20am - Ritz Half Marathon

It isn't unrelated. Obama DESERVES USA performance of the year for how his "HOPE" and "CHANGE" brought us these great times. The athletes are merely the proxies doing the will of the Messiah.
The Flying Spaghetti monster disapproves.
