It sounds as if both Ryan Vail and German Fernandez, by being wimps and skipping their home meet, have fallen behind their teammates. Was Ryan Vail injured over the summer or something as well as German? Chris Derrick ran at the Stanford Invite as well didn't he?
I think a lot of the German fans are overlooking Derrick's improvement. In Jason Dunn's FloTrack interview from Terra Haute, he talked about how Chris Derrick is a totally new runner this year. A scary thought, as last year's less good CD finished 7th. While he was a stud, no doubt, for a freshman a year ago, he is now at a level where he's a stud regardless of age. Whereas we're debating what his PRs mean, like consensus says is true of Rupp, in all likelihood Derrick is better than his 13:29 right now.
On the other hand we have German. He is much tougher to analyze. Depending on what one believes, he was poised to finish top-3 last year, he faked an injury because he couldn't handle the 10km distance, or something in between; we don't know. Last week he finished 11th at Chili Pepper because either he was pacing Stublaski (is that right?) and running it as a tempo run, or because he missed a ton of training and is only in 11th-at-Chili-Pepper shape right now. If the first theories are correct, then German will compete for the individual title. If not, he won't be anywhere near the top 2.
Even if German is at 100%, he will have to have a very good race to win. Derrick has stepped it up a couple notches this year, and Chelanga, in my mind, should still be the favorite.
Have u guys ever wondered if he was taking it easy considering it was his first race and he just cruised. He is a young kid and running a 10k that soon could be a bad thing. Specially if he is been injured. I think he is in great shape and coach didnt want to let him go all out. due to this injury and lack of training

Derrick jogged the Stanford Invite with his teammates, most of whom were racing.
As for Vail, I think Smith said somewhere that Vail is usually clicking as soon as he steps foot on the track/course, so Smith didn't feel there was anything to be gained by running him at Jamboree.
To be honest, I'm surprised Smith ran either German or Vail in Fayetteville. I lean towards believeing German was jogging, because it would seem uncharacteristic of Smith to run him all-out in an early season meet.
Is it me or is he always getting hurt. Maybe too much too soon?
I would like to hear German's High School Coach's with regard to keeping German injury-free.

This way, German will be prepared to pace Stublaski in the final.
Uhhhh, or maybe coach told him to run at Stublaski's pace because it was the same tempo pace he was shooting for???

Its like he is a battleship with 100 guns built on board, the most and best guns ever created. Then he gets hurt and misses training. So he goes into battle with tarps covering say 25 of his guns and only firing away with 75 guns. His greatest enemies only have 85 built on board but they are always blazing away with 82. Seems its easier for German to repair the guns that he needs for the track, mile, 1500 etc faster. However, the 10000 CC takes longer time to take those tarps off those particular guns. Derrick is very strong and firing on everything. Love to see German get out there at 100%. I do hope I am wrong. Sorry for the idiotic post."
Battleships? really?
Dork.
One of the greatest coaches and runners in this country explained this the exact same way to us many years ago. You know the old... some guys have greater natural ability
than others. How do we catch them in an aerobic race such as the 10000. As you call me a dork I just smiled, thinking of that great in the 70's talking to us. He is still with us today, doing very well. He said his Father explained it such to him. We had watched him in the Dream mile. It was an honor to have even met him. I will take the name calling, from such a tough guy, as you. Maybe I am a dork...but he was not.
This is the post of the thread. Derrick is running great right now, and in his interview before Pre-Nats he spoke about coming into this season and knowing his competition. This showed in his tactics at Indiana against Chelanga (who I also believe should still be considered the favortite at this point).
I did not see any video of German at Chili Pepper, and I am curious about this talk that he was looking to be in pain. I can't imagine Smith racing him if he didn't believe there was no chance of injuring him--meaning that he either planned to pace his teammate all along, or that something went wrong during the race. Does anybody have a 5K split to see where he was at that point? That would hint at whether he was on pace all along or whether he fell of.
Either way, GF has proven to be a monster at times, and if he is in shape he will be in the hunt for the title. I see a 3-man race developing right now, with Puskedra closing the gap along with a tough chase pack not far behind (Heath did beat Luke's time by 1 second, although he was chasing as opposed to leading).

Could you repeat that one more time? I didn't quite catch it the first time.
I think I agree with the gun analogy. That probably makes the most sense to me.

Thanks for dumbing this down, I am a huge gun guy and this really spoke to me.
