Regarding Choge, I have long felt he could possibly be a real threat in the 5000, especially in slowish championship races. He ran 13:00, 3:29 and 1:44 this year.

I'm saying that I think that Lagat and any other true champion would rather defeat Bekele (or any other competitor) when Bekele or whomever is at top shape. Otherwise, it's somewhat of an empty victory. On the other hand, I agree that Bekele takes pride in beating Lagat.
It depends on the circumstance. If you are the challenger, then you should seek to defeat the 1st person while they are at their best. If you are the challenged, then you should take pride in beating anyone in any shape.
