How I can have an actual quote from tv interview from decades ago? You can try to find that Vasala´s book and read yourself. It´s called "Pekka Vasala - Mitalin toinen puoli"
printed in 1975.

HRE,
He gave a direct link from "roadmillslaps" (RML) interview with Bakken, and a double-hearsay quote from Vasala.
So, despite the inference of the subject line, this thread is not at all about Arthur Lydiard's statements.
Right. But nothing in Bakken's quote says that Lydiard coached Viren. He's making up some idea that doesn't exist anywhere except in his own mind and perhaps in some obscure book written in Finnish.
Of course he's correct. Arthur did not coach Viren. He didn't coach Lorraine Moller either, nor Dick Quax, Anne Audain,or Rod Dixon. Yet all of those athletes acknowledge that they used the Lydiard Method.
So yes, the OP is accurate in what he writes. But it's old news and not much of a revelation to anyone who has paid much attention to the sport yet he's presenting this idea of his as if it's some great revelation.
Well, not to nitpick, but RML did say: "I thought Lydiard mastered periodization and used it to with great success for the athletes he coached—-athletes like [Lasse] Viren and of course New Zealanders."
So Bakken didn't say it, but the interviewer did.
However, I agree in sentiment with the rest.
I think the interviewer should be taken to a public square, drawn, and quartered for not being up to speed on 1970s Finnish running. Clearly, the misinformed statement ruined the whole interview. I want my money back!
See "Truth", now there's the problem. You expect us to accept that despite everything Lydiard said in books, interviews, and in person to many of us regarding his relationship with Viren, that he was really a liar, because according to you "Vasala says that Arthur told in some television program that he was the coach." In other words, Vasal, a Finn who presumably had imperfect English skills, "decades ago" heard Lydiard say on television that he directly coached Viren. This is double hearsay involving a great time lapse and multiple languages.
That is simply not a persuasive argument in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Mark
There isn´t any problem. I don´t except that you or anybody else accept anything I say, I´ve made my point. Take care!
By the way, I´m happy that Chigaco lost. Go Rio De Janeiro!
Oh sorry, Chicago!
So what was your point?
Whether Bakken said it or the interviewer did is irrelevant. The thread is called "Lydiard and His Statements."

So because you have the mistaken impression that Lydiard claimed to have coached Viren, that makes Arthur a liar? That's brilliant.
I first met Arthur in the summer of 1981, and this is the first I've EVER heard of Lydiard claiming to have coached Viren.
Potential troll: "Hmm...what can I do to get an immediate reaction on letsrun? Ok. Today I'll rile up the Lydiard crowd with some bogus accusations and string them along with no real evidence to support my claims. That should be good for at least 3 pages"
Score so far:
Troll-3
LR crowd-0 (for being so gullible)
Me-0 for reading this entire thread anyway. Although I did laugh at the comment accusing Lydiard of lying about "Brian Sell's" 200mpw. Hey, I guess if one is going to show ignorance might as well do it in style!!
My point again to you HRE: ARTHUR LYDIARD DID NOT COACH LASSE VIREN. Got it?

Then it was the time to hear the truth. Mistaken impression? Can´t you read? Read again what I wrote about that tv interview. Because you´ve maybe met Arthur, that doesn´t mean anything.
I´m not "troll". But thanks from your points.
Oh. As you see, almost everyone kndew that before you did.

Yes, we all get it but we all knew it before: Arthur Lydiard did was not Viren's personal coach. But unless you can find a direct quote from Lydiard himself saying that he was the personal coach of Viren, you're second point saying that Arthur claimed he was Viren's coach, is simply not true.
Everywhere, he tried to take all glory he could take by claiming that "I coached this and that" after he only gave some lessons or advices. That´s not coaching.
Buy the Vasala´s book. Except the truth. Move on.

I 'accept' that Lydiard was not Viren's personal coach.
Sorry, accept the truth. But it seems that you just want to deny that no matter what.
