Um, believe Phil Knight would be the correct answer! Granted he wasnt' a world beater, but believe he was a 4:10 miler, which back in the late 50's wasn't so shabby!

i rooted for holman back in the 90s, but as many have said, he didn't come through when it counted. he was too good to not make olympic and world teams, yet he missed many.
anyhow, he ran NYC in 2007 and of course no one recognizes him. i yelled his name, and he turns around surprised and gives me the head nod. sweet!
He looks like a better looking version of Obama..
Bannister was not a neurosurgeon.

The name Sebastian Coe, for one, comes to mind.
Sir Roger Bannister - neurosurgeon.
Steve Ovett - TV broadcaster (a damn good one)
D W I G H T - TV broadcaster (a damn good one)
Angelo Taylor - Shagging 14-year-olds in the backseat of his car.
Michelle Dela Vina - Bank robbery.
Steve's a good guy.
He only won one outdoor USA championship (1999) and one indoor. But had some NCAA titles.
He was in great shape in 1996. Dominating the first two rounds at the Oly Trials but finished 13th in the finals.
3:31.52 1500m PR from 1997.
Although he had superior times he did not make the US team in 1993, 1995 or 1996 and was placed on the 1997 squad by default (apparently was DQ'ed although I don't recall this- and was placed on the team because only one other guy had the standard). 1994 was sick at USATF and did not make the final. Placed 4th at 1998 USATF and 5th in 2000.
Obviously US Championships were not kind to him although he would attain world rankings. One top 3 placing at USATF in his last 8 years.
I wish he would have done better because we had no one else that could even compete on the world stage in the 1500 once Spivey moved up to the 5000.
Glad he is doing well. Surely not better than any retired runner, though.
Why so huffy?

That's what ttc does. He attacks everyone (lumping every single letsrunner into one category) in every single post. He normally starts his own threads where he self congratulates for apparently being the only person to believe whatever it is he is babbling about.
For instance he'll say he knew Ritz was going to run 12:56 and point to something he wrote on tnfmedia in 1999. Of course, I made that up but it probably happened.
Regardless, ttc is a childish poster who believes the key to Alan Webb's success is running cross country and doesn't understand when and where to use commas.
Don't forget AlSal- coach of Ritz and Rupp and Webb- he seems to be doing OK for himself.
If he's doing so well, why does he have to work?
I'm a retired runner - age 47 - I'm a retired businessman - was working class poor as a teenager - now I don't even cut my own lawn...or wipe my own ass if I did'nt want to.
Steve Spence is cooler, and still faster

Holman was a great runner.
Sorry to see him stoop to going to work for the mutual fund/ insurance industry.

Mr. Holman now serves as the Department Head of Operations and Strategy for Vanguard Annuity and Insurance Services. ..B.A. in English from Georgetown University and an MBA in finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania". (Also, Holman's a Board of Director on USATF).
Two championships for a guy who supposedly couldn't win that race, 9th in the world, Olympian, class act and a great success if he never even ran a step. 100% of the people who criticized him, would love to be in his shoes. You guys sure can pick the losers... I don't remember anyone standing up for him, except quite frankly, me. Anything else you guys wanted from him?? How about bashing Teg' or Ritz' races as time trials, like always done with Holman??
Yeah, ttc, the fact that Steve Holman is a usccess means you're a genius for "standing up for him."
The fact you would bring up some nonsense from over adecade ago to toot your horn over some trivial shit proves you to be, in fact, the biggest f***ing dildo to ever grace these boards. And that's really saying something.

I don't remember you standing up for him? When or where? The only person on this board I've ever heard standing up for Holman over the years (and on darkwing) is Malmo.
he's an impressive man

What are you talking about. I liked the guy. I would stand up for him anytime.
Steve is not even the most distinguished HOYA middle distance runner - ncaa 800 champ is a Federal Judge in DC for many years.
What I did not like about Steve Holman was, he was so damn good looking I was jealous. Im sure he has realy bad breath though.
My girlfriend at the time would comment on his looks.
I hate the guy and I gave it to him on the polo fields.
