I wasn't surprised that Ovett ran 3:30.77 in Rieti, 83, despite being past his best, for the simple reason that he was capable of much faster earlier in his career (78-81). He didn't even try to break a WR until late '79 and then had to focus on Moscow the next year. Besides, the pacing he got (as with Coe) early in his career was pretty uneconomical. He was taken to 800m in Rieti in 1:51, a time which I can't remember him having run in any of his previous fast runs. They usually went out in 55 then 1:53.

The same applies to Coe. Yes, he probably was slightly past his best in 86, but then he was still good enough to beat Cram and rank No.1 in the World over 800m that year. He was even more a victim of bad pacing than Ovett in his prime, and he ran far fewer 1500s than his contemporaries due to running the 800 as well. People were talking about him running 3:28 as far back as '80, so 3:29.77 (having stumbled into the pace maker at the bell) was not unexpected at 30.

There's obviously some "magical" quality about the conditions in Rieti, but it's ludicrous to suggest that it was short on the basis of a few really fast runs from a few individuals.

3:33 is a pretty standard sort of time on the circuit these days. Not sure what the splits were, but it's hardly a disgrace if the first 800 was any slower than 1:54. As for 7:31, that certainly isn't a shit time. It may not be as impressive as Rudisha's time or that close to the WR (which is pretty untouchable for anyone), but it's the 5th fastest time this year!

you are delusional if you think 3'33/7'31 & 4'01 are in same converstion as 1'42.01

there were top athletes in those other races & they run pathetically slow for what was expected in rieti - 3'29/7'27 or 7'28 & 3'56 or 3'57 was my expectation

quite clearly the wind wrecked those races & therefore no reason to believe it didn't seriously adversely affect the 1'42.01

just the poor wind ( not even considering the wabbit yet ) probably cost him a mid-1'41

I made it quite clear that 7:31 was not as good as 1:42, but disagree that 7:31 is a "shit clocking" as you so delicately put.

As for the wind, it seems you can't make up your mind how it affects runners over 2 laps.

Now I doubt the wind was a constant of 3m/s for the race, so by your calculations, Rudisha's time would have been no faster than 1:41.7, not the 1:41.5 you mention.

Had he been any nationality other than Kenyan, I'm sure not even a hurricane would have affected his time adversely.

Well, what about Yego? He's good but he's never run this fast before. If you look at the conditions overall, and by this I mean the track, competition, weather, etc., there is no way it was anything but good conditions. The times were too fast for any other conclusion. It still helps to have a wabbit, even if he is a bit too far in front. Trust me on that one.
