If you run a half marathon 3 weeks before a marathon, it will be a great predictor unless you are undertrained for the marathon distance.
On the other hand, trying to correlate a May marathon time with an August half marathon time is kinda silly.
The half is a good predictor only if you interrupt your marathon training to taper for the half. If you are pushing your marathon training to the edge you will be carrying a pile of cumulative fatigue that will only subside when you taper for your goal marathon.
