Upon completing an American Red Cross foundation 5k on Saturday (8/1), I donated a pint of blood to the Red Cross. I have signed up to compete in another 5k this coming Saturday (8/9). I have spoken to several individuals about when I should begin training and competing again, but I continue to receive a variety of answers. Does anyone "KNOW" when a safe recovery period has lapsed for me to return to my passion?
Well, most people would be able to run 5k a week later, no problem.
Depending on many individual factors (and differences between the two races), your time may be faster this week. Odds are, however, that it will be at least a minute slower.

There's no reason to take time off from running, but don't expect to be quite as fast. You probably won't even notice on sub-maximal efforts, but you'll be significantly slower than you otherwise would have been on your race next Saturday, assuming you give it an honest effort. It'll take about 7 or 8 weeks for your body to replace the blood you lost.
