I have Crohn's. E-mail me about your condition, running, and diet, and I will try to help.
My wife has colitis and she has not had a flare up in 15 months due to her diet which was lots of carbo's such as bread, potatos and pasta with out tomato scauce. Do not drink milk or eat dairy products durring flare ups . When you don't have the problem watch your diet and milk products and fruits and veg. with seeds. Moderation seems to be the key. She is also taking asacall ( spelling)pills 3x a day 2 pills at a time which seems to help.
Good luck.
I'm curious over how colitis manifests itself during races and training. One of my assistant coaches who I somewhat advise has no problem in training, but in races he gets painful stomach or lower rib cage attacks. Doesn't seem like a stitch or cramp, though. Any help?
I too have ulcerative colitis. When there is not a flare up, it is not a problem with training. However, I found you must be careful not to get too run down. Flare-ups for me sometimes occur when I don't get enough sleep, am running a lot, am not eating well, and under a lot of stress. Diet is important, but I have heard differnt things from different people. Find what works for you. I have also had some luck with chiropractic work relieving symptoms to a certain extent.
I have colitis as well, and just like TeddyKGB said, I have to be careful not to get too run down or stressed. Some people get headaches when they are stressed; I get a colitis flare-up. Go figure. I have only had one flare-up during a race, but can't figure out what triggered it. I tend to stay away from dairy, but every once in a while I can tolerate yogurt.
