If you watch enough distance running, you'll notice that elites always seem to look the most effortless during their strongest performances

She wasn't exactly running the 800 in the most efficient way when she was running those 2:0x's though. Maybe she just figured out how to run the 800 finally.
You are all nuts. Here's a girl who runs like an avowed idiot in her races, and runs 2.XX minutes five times. Then she finally runs a good tactical race, goes through is a solid split of 59 flat, is able to relax, and then kicks to a high 1:57. That is far from crazy.
Look at the girl, she is built for the 800m, she is talented, fast, and is getting into great races.
I am a believer.

i agree with you. and for the non believers, do you think they might take samples and have labs in monaco, home of the IAAF, to do drug testing at/after the meet? seems like maggie's breakthrough would make her a likely candidate to be tested a lot this summer. and i have never heard ray flynn encourages drug use so cut the attack and him unless you have FACTS.
Fastest in 11 years, number 7 all time usa
I were as cynical and negative as some of the people on this board are, I would shoot myself.
She's a former NCAA runnerup (and not at a top tier program) and was fifth in the Olympic Trials last year. She has gotten into a higher level of races this year than ever before. THAT in itself is a reason for much of the improvement. How many times, before 2009, was she even IN a race where anyone ran under 2:00.
You know....think of Dorian Ulrey in Rome. The kid was in the best race of his life...not just hIS race but THE race...and he ran a personal best by four seconds. You want to be suspicious of him now.
Maggie ran a much more reasonable opening 400 today than she has recently, and she managed to get a clear run at the end despite the size of the field.
It's all good news. Sorry that some of you have such dark souls that you can't see that.
Have you ever met Vessey?
I heard from someone who has interviewed her that she is the dumbest woman ever.
So for a normal person, i'd be a bit suspicious but not with her.
Who else runs 25 meters behing the pack? Considering she was running 2:00, running like an absolute moron, i think the jump is plausible.
Plenty of HS kids go from 2:02 to 1:57high in a year. Why not her. It would be unusual at her age but she is a moron

my friend if you are compairing H.S. running to top class world running I believe you are dumber than you claim miss Vessey is!
Umm.... ever heard of Rashid Ramzi?
Guys please if you do not have a valid proof that she is on performance enhancing drugs please SHUT THE HELL UP. She finally runs sub 2min to make the world and some of you haters want to say negative things about her. I remember my first year in college when I ran from 47.4 to 45.0 people who did not know me or know what kind of training I did started making up stories. Let her enjoy her hard work and allow her concetrate in bringing back the gold from berlin. USA middle distance female runners are on fire this year!
Mentioning Dorian's name is not a good comparison. In many meets this year Dorian ran multiple races and racing in college is very different than racing in a professional meet. Have you ran at any level before?
After you were finished running at that level and away from the team for some time you now run a time that much faster?
If Maggie was a sprinter or from another company then letsrun and this site would be bashing her!
Also, it was clearly a very fast night of track...i.e. the conditions favored good times for once. Kaki, Borzakovsky, Symmonds, Baala, Van Zyl, Bershawn Jackson, Lashinda Demus--all ran great times, and several world leading times.
Another reason not to suspect Vessey.
women who run sub-1:58 in the 800 are going to be suspected of drug use, just as women who run sub-4 in the 1500 will be. suspected. ... but as usual, if it's an american, i hope it's real.

I agree, I used to get teased I was on something because I dropped my mile time by 12 seconds from SR yr h.s. to Fr College. Plus she finally ran a smart race where she wasn't in the back
Did she still have negative/even splits?
I am not totally surprised; I said a while back that I thought Vessey had a 1:58 in her once she ran a more honest race. Although, she exceeded my expectations. One day AF is going to drop her 400m by a second; will this surprise anyone? Sometimes you can see that an athlete has a lot more in them once they make a few changes.
The most impressive thing about the race to me was how well she performed under the pressure. Last chance to qualify for Worlds and she throws down a world best. I can't remember ever seeing someone go from an improbable qualifier to a World leader in the last week of July.

Well said - I totaly agree!
This makes me want to start running again to try to go under 2.
unreal! and impressive, the U.S. women are doing great!
