If track and field is ever going to be the most popular sport on TV, then this is it. Field event throwers heaving medicine balls at the fragile elite 10,000m athletes.

29 runners start a 10k, every lap, one of them gets voted off by the spectators. After 24 laps, those voted off vote on which of the remaining 5 should win. every one holds hands at the finish line and sings "kumbayah."
if tandf is ever going to be popular is has to be as stupid as the other sports.
Full contact running! FCR--it has a nice ring to it.
You cannot tackle, impede, or level a guy unless he/she is on the same lap as you. This prevents runners from intentionally getting lapped and then nailing someone who is in the lead. If you want to tackle the leader, then you have to stay with them.
No pads.
No punching. Only ackling, lowering the shoulder, leg whips, and stuff like that.
Some will argue that football players will start running 10k's. But if they can't stay with you for over a lap, then they're out of it.
Imagine Abdi, Culpepper, and a host of other skinny guys having to deal with the likes of myself (with 12 inch guns) and McMullen. Survival of the fittest.

Put a hodge-podge of track spikes, bowling shoes, javelin spikes, Teva sandals, cowboy boots, and hip-hop sneaks in a big box, and let athletes get blind draw on footwear.
i'd have to go with the 4x400m steeplechase, no lanes. or possibly the 3000m shotput, in which you get a combined score, for time, place and distance.
how about last guys goes out....start a 10k with 26 guys, who ever is in last at the end of each lap gets pulled...the guys that is left wins, guy pulled on lap 25 is 2nd, one yanked after 24 is 3rd, etc....
Wags - This actually happens. The first lap is usually brutal, like 50 something. Then it comes down to surges everytime the pack nears the last 100m.
Sounds like some of the X-C races I have been in in Vanny... plenty of contact in the back hills...
Not that I ever engaged in any of that... (sure sure)
Every lap the last person is eliminated from the race until there is only 5 people left to run for the money.
Sounds a lot like a cycling race that they routinely run in Japan - I think its called a Keirin or something like that... pretty exciting to watch actually kind of like short track speedskating on bikes
