I agree. I'd rather see him run Chicago, of course. But to call him a complete idiot? Haha. That's just insanity.

NYC got Lel and Radcliffe when they were both #1 in the world. It's hardly accurate to say NYC never gets the best.
Ryan has a decent shot at winning NYC, he would likely have to settle for third or lower in Chicago if they really end up getting Wanjiru and Evans Cheruiyot.
My guess is that after running Boston and NYC this year trying to be competetive in open races he will run London in the spring and shoot for a new PR and maybe the AR.

He's an "idiot" (maybe a little strong) for not commiting to Chicago much sooner. He dicked around for months debating and guess what, Chicago got the big dog so there is no more money. Oh well, hopefully he runs it some year. Best of luck to him in NY, I have a feeling it will be a letdown just like Boston because he won't win and he won't get pulled to a fast time. The excitement after he ran 2:06 in London was awesome even if he got 5th (or whatever place, I don't remember). The problem with that is that now on these slow courses it is win or be dissapointed (general population running fans).
i was wrong to say he's an absolute idiot.
I'm just frustrated.
Being a Chicagoan, I've never seen an American born marathoner be competitive at our Marathon. There are just africans racing crazy times, which is great but I'd like to see more americans at chicago instead of just boston or new york.
You're not taking into account the larger forces at work.
Carey's major sponsors would rather see Wanjiru pumped up, given media exposure and take a serious shot a the WR than have media focus on Ryan Hall's challenge.
Similarly, having an American win New York would be huge, and given Ryan's sponsorship, he has underlying reasons to run there compared with other marathons.
true.
I'd question your supposition that Carey's sponsors would rather focus on a possible WR by Wanjiru rather than a possible victory by Ryan Hall. I'd severely question it.
Let's just see how he handles my 6:00/mile surges.
Question it all you like, but Nike has no desire to see Hall as the center of attention at one of their marathons.

Also consider the weather. Chicago has been a sauna the past two years. Hall might not have wanted to gamble that things would be different this year -- because if it is, he trains three months to do what? Run 2:10 and come in fifth? Maybe third on a good day.
This way he can be pretty sure of a top 3 performance with a decent chance to win, and when he runs 2:09 or slower, no one is going to be calling him a failure.
chicago marathon site has the wanjiru announcement up.
Here's Mary Wittenberg's Tweet: "Fall fireworks! Haile VS Kibet VS Wrecord in Berlin. Sammy VS WR in Chicago. Man against man against course and big field in n y..stay tuned"
How did this thread get this far without someone asking why Wanjiru is ducking Haile in Berlin?
Yup, Geb goes to Kenya and invites (challenges?) Wanjiru to run in Berlin. He accepts, Berlin makes announcements. Now Wanjiru is running Chicago...
Yeah, that Geb, always ducking competition...
Why the hate-on for NYC? Having run it twice I can attest it is tough, but the best marathon location, course and organization I have ever run. Hall made the right choice, and America will care more about the marathon (and running) because of it....seriously, why do we judge the speed of the course, instead of the race? If Hall takes NYC, I will have more respect for him than ever.
why not wait until all these races post their ENTIRE elite fields, before saying the field will be weak?
NY also doesn't have pacers.
Im going to mess Wanjiru up wrote:

You can't because now they start the elites 5:00 ahead of the masses. So you'll need to run 27:00 10k's for the first 15 miles or so to catch up to him, which might make you too tired to surge.

It would take a miracle for him to get the American record. He'll probably never PR again (only seven people have ever run that speed or faster twice).
To everyone else: Why is Geb criticized for going for time and Hall criticized when he doesn't?
