Anyone that makes the claim that JD hasn't done an incredible job building the distance program at WSU just plan has not done their homework. I challenge anyone to look at first the athletes and recruits (this is a trick question because the year Li left WSU had zero incoming distance runners - ZERO) that were left by Li for JD to start with. Next in order to judge a coaches ability to help produce athletes it is necessary to first look at what high school times the athletes had and then what they ran as WSU athletes. If you are thourough you will see a list of 9:20 + two milers in JD's initial years that turned in to an NCAA qualifying CC team.
For the genious that claimed JD hasn't had athletes score how about 2 time Pac-10 steeple champion Sara Trane (who by the way came in as a 400 hurdler so I think that means JD built her from scratch from a training standpoint). Or how about the two years of 15 plus points in the women's steeple alone at the Pac-10 meet.
JD has without question completely re-written the women's top 10 lists which in my opinoin means he is the best women's distance coach WSU has ever had. JD has coached 4 women to 5k times under the old WSU school record and three under the old 3k steeple record. The indoor 3k and mile also are full of JD coached athletes.
For those that claim the Chappy days were so much better - its true WSU men had a lot of very talented individuals that placed well nationally. They rarely in the Chappy era however qualified a TEAM to the NCAA cross championships. JD accomplished that with a team who's total scholarship count was less than .50
The bottom line is Chappy was working with mostly foreign athletes in a different era with VERY different Eligibilty rules. In opinion it is not all that impressive to bring in already world class runners. Kenya's best young runners are not lining up to attent ANY U.S. University.
JD has now positioned the WSU distance program to be competitve in the Pac-10. Instead of the 9:20 - 9:40 guys he was able to get the first years he has over the past two years brought in some of the states best high school runners. Whoever takes over will be finding a program head and schoulders above where it was when JD arrived.
Do you homework before taking shots at JD.
