A lot of stores don't allow vendor spiffs because all it does is move around marketshare without helping customers or the store.

Okay for you lazy folk who could not figure it out...
"Spiff" is a slang term for "SPIV" which is short for "Sales Performance Incentive."
I.E.
Acronym: SPIV
Definition: Sales Performance Incentive
Slang: Spiff
Definition: Slang term for the sum paid by a vendor's salesperson to a retailer's salesperson to motivate him or her to push the vendor's goods.

I'd rather have a different acronym thank you. Be a bit more creative please.
At my store, a running and triathlon store, employees receive a $20 spiff for selling a wetsuit. If they sell a bicycle, it is a $50 spiff. All employees are given a pair of running shoes as a "sign on bonus" when they are hired, so they are wearing a shoe we sell. When shoe companies give "seed" shoes, I make sure that all employees receive a pair (if possible). Finally, all employees can purchase anything at cost, and can participate in any EP program (employee purchase).
At the place where I work, we don't get any "SPIFF" or whatever it's called. No commissions. We get seeded with shoes or gear from time to time, but that only happens once or twice a year. We get stuff in the store at cost plus 25%, we can also order stuff direct from most companies for cost minus 10-25% depending on the company.
We get "spiff" and some sales people take advantage of it and some do not. However, in the end customers keep the shoes from the good salespeople regardless of whether its the right shoe for them.

Great. You had to explain the obvious to a bunch of no-future minimum wage running store employees. The only Olympics these tools will ever be competing at will be the one with Obama there.
I get stiff when I touch high school girls' feet.
