the letter why wrote:Top 5 in the country at 18 isn't "stellar"?
Especially in the deepest event in US Mens distance running.
It's all relative. To be clear he was top 5 in the US championships 5K, that is different than being top 5 in the country in an event as I'm sure you'll notice when the T&F rankings come out when the season is over.
Incidentally he's now 8th on the list for 2009 with some pros left with racing yet:
13:03.06 Bernard Lagat (Nik) Reebok GP 05/30
13:17.98 Anthony Famiglietti (Sauc) Mt SAC 04/17
13:18.12i -Galen Rupp (Or) Tyson Inv 02/13
13:18.41 Chris Solinsky (OTC) Mt SAC 04/17
13:20.57 Matt Tegenkamp (OTC) USATF 06/26
13:22.18 Evan Jager (OTC) USATF 06/26
13:24.00 Bolota Asmerom (Nik) USATF 06/26
13:25.46 ***German Fernandez (OkSt) USATF 06/26
13:26.90 Jonathon Riley (Nik) USATF 06/26
13:27.17 Sean Quigley (Pum) Mt SAC 04/17
13:27.79 *Brandon Bethke (AzSt) Mt SAC 04/17
13:28.45 Hasssan Mead (Mn) Payton Jordan 05/02
13:29.12 Robert Curtis (Reeb) Hamilton Inv 04/25
13:29.98 ***Chris Derrick (Stan) Payton Jordan 05/02
It's a great mark of course but with Jager at 13:22 and plenty of racing left and Bethke at 13:27 and Derrick at 13:29 I think that puts it into perspective. Remember none of those guys ran withing 15 seconds of his best 3200/2 mile in highschool, though Derrick surely could have if had been healthy his senior year.
If we were talking about anyone of the other guys on this list hitting that mark and 5th at USA's as a freshman I would say it is stellar (including Lagat and Rupp). But this is German Fernandez, and I'd call it solid, not stellar. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing to run 13:25 for 5th at that age and not be stellar.
For reference Rupp ran 28:15 with the last 9 laps alone as a freshman which would currently put him at 7th on the US list:
10,000 METERS
27:36.99 Tim Nelson (OTC) Payton Jordan 05/02
27:39.68 Anthony Famiglietti (Sauc) Hamilton Inv 04/25
27:52.53 -Galen Rupp (Or) USATF 06/25
27:58.59 Dathan Ritzenhein (Nik) USATF 06/25
28:00.22 Fasil Bizuneh (NBal) Hamilton Inv 04/25
28:13.37 James Carney (NBal) USATF 06/25
28:16.81 Jorge Torres (Reeb) OTC Open 06/06
28:16.87 Ed Torres (Reeb) OTC Open 06/06
And most expect Fernandez to have more tools and further along than Rupp as a freshman.

If you didn't go through team processing you're not eligible to be named to the US team for Worlds. It's as simple as that. They did all the processing this year at the building adjacent to the track (where drug testing took place, too) right after the completion of the event.
Zero chance Webb will run at Worlds.
You have a great future ahead of you at the Post Office
Nice run by Ulrey - one issue resolved
Now the 5k - Somebody has to run an A

Look you gRUPPy, this is a thread about Ulrey, please try to show an once of dignity.
But just so you know, 13:25 is WAYYYYY greater than 28:15.
13:25 is only 5 seconds off the A standard. Meanwhile, 28:15 is 28 seconds off the A standard. It's not even the B standard! You would not be allowed to run at world champs with a 28:15 even if you represented Fiji.
