Not a bad showing for Justin Young. I'm sure he's hitting 120+ miles per week, getting ready for Berlin. Up front, it looked like Prefontaine II couldn't hold off Vladamir Kutz II. Abdi actually managed to run faster than his USAs track 10k time.

There were actually more Americans under 29:30... Jeremy Criscione just graduated from Florida, I believe, and he ran 29:28... Girma Mechesmo, a local boy, ran 29:26 or so.
anyone know what the conditions/weather was like?
Girma Mecheso- I believe he is going to be a Soph at Auburn next year?
yes, Girma will be a soph at Auburn next year. It was low 70's and very dry air. Unusually good conditions this year.
- No one should care about the results of the US men because their should be no such thing as either a 5K or 10K championship......there are two champions at this distance and they earned it last week in Eugene -- Teg and Rupp. Furthermore, there should be no such thing as a USATF road race championship UNLESS its "purpose-driven" such as selecting a international team for Eikeden or World Half-Marathon. These BS championships take away scarce funding that USATF could use in developing the support in many other ways --- like sponsoring events (ex. CAN-AMs) over the summer given the plethora of our athletes that lack either the "A" or "B" standard. This is not fair to the rest of the track and field community (sprinter, middle-distance, field events) to offer a "double tap" championship with USATF money. Give this to the RRCA or someone that cares....these are hollow championships for they lead to nothing else.
- FAM just proved my point from last weeks "Uncensored" The Week that Was post....he didn't want to make the WC team, he was focused on this race.
- Brian Sell also proved my point on my 1-Trick Pony marathon trend we're seeing.....how does he expect to get better over the marathon when he can only muster a 30:18.
fam is now a road whore :-)
NATE PECK HAD THE OVER ALL HE HIT SELL WITH 5 AND 1/2 TO GO THERE A PROTEST ABOUT THIS .
Geesh ... how about those doosh escorts in the women's race? 4 of em right in the middle of the lead pack. Taking away tangents and just in the way. Are they not smart enough to run 10 yards back???
That's a bogus statement if I've ever heard of one....The majority of USATF sponsored championship prize pools are funded by the local races, not the USATF. Have you ever been invited to one?? The local race puts you up in a hotel, pays for your plane ticket, gives per-diem and often times funds the prize pool.Regardless, these races allow the vast majority of American distance runners to make a little profit and stay competitive on a year round basis. These races are grounds for them to get exposure when going to Europe may not be in their cards. They also act as a cross country season of sorts in the fall. The USATF road series is crucial and I can't imagine any elite distance runner that would think otherwise.
I agree without the road circuit NONE of our distance athletes would make enough money to keep running.
- I think you and Pinky are naive to think that no money at all passes hands between USATF and the Road Race in question. Just time spent on the phone discussing such a b.s. championship is time on the clock that the lean USATF officials could be using more efficiently elsewhere.
- Local Yocals can have as many road races as they want .... just don't call them championships unless USATF is going to select a team. It's a "hollow" championship .... one just help market the road race. If I was a shoe company sponsor I wouldn't even recognize this as a contract incentive. Does Abdi and his sponsor really think he's the top 10K Runner in the nation? Furthermore USATF's oversaturated the term/designation of "champion." If it reduced the number of championships to those that focus on fielding international teams then it would serve as an incentive for the top athletes to show at the ones which really count.
The Africans make all the money.

Jeremy redshirted track this year so he will be back next year (no more cross eligability though).
USATF officials talking on the phone organizing national championship races is a waste of time? WTF else are they going to do with their time? What is more efficient that organizing meets for elite distance runners to compete at a high levels against other elite distance runners?
If the USATF can't fund a few national championship type races than we've got some real issues. Where else would their money be spent? In the sprints, throws, or jumps? America's weakest even at the international level is the distances thus needing the most development.
No, Abdi's shoe sponsor doesn't think he is America's best distance runner, but Abdi just won $10k then some...that's what matters. Same with Fam, Carney, Burrell, etc.
If you had any experience at an elite level you would realize it's not the title these guys are after, it's the competition and even the cash. Everyone realizes the "true" 5k and 10k champions are Teg and Rupp...
- Lickety Point #1: We agree that "Everyone realizes the "true" 5K and 10K champions are Teg and Rupp..."
- Lickety Point #2: If you agree w/Point #1 then you must agree that USATF's wasting time developing a redundant championship in the 5K/10K.
- Lickety Point #3: Your right, USATF has issues ..... the United States gets SMOKED at IAAF events such as World Cross and Road Races. Therefore, a more efficient use of USATF time is putting efforts into setting conditions for the next national team to compete in international road championships (ex. IAAF 1/2 Marathon, Eikden). If not, USATF's lean staff begins to fall into the "All things to All Men" trap.
- Lickety Point #4: Prize Money. Good for Abdi, Fam, et al for winning whatever prize money was left over from the Africans. Too bad those same US performances can't be replicated when it counts for the United States in IAAF competitions.
- "Hand-to-Mouth" vs World Competition: Dream....the difference between you and me is that you care about how our folks compete in the Road Race of the Month Club, whereas I care about how our folks perform during IAAF competition.
Peachtree is Peachy, but ain't Classy....if you had experience at the elite level you'd understand.
Oh By The Way.....
Lickety Point #5: If anyone thinks this is actually a RACE then their naive....its 2 x Races - 1 for the Africans and the rest for Americans. What else explains FAM or Abdi going after Kitwara. These BS events are a SHAM!

This statement makes no sense. What do you mean?
Agree....not even worth a "I hink he meant...."
